Trip from Colorado Springs to N. New Mexico
My husband and I are planning a trip with our 3 daughters age 16,11 and 8. We will be in Colorado Springs for 2 nights and then would like to go down into New Mexico for another 2 to 4 nights. I have looked at the Red River, Taos area, but I am not sure if there is enough to do. I am wondering if anyone has ideas of things that we should do and see on the way? I had thought we would stay in Red River and take day trips from there. We enjoy staying in cabins with the little kitchenettes, but I am having trouble finding in that area.

When is the trip? What kind of activities do you enjoy? Outdoor, museums, hike, bike, ???
Is eating in a variety on nice to really nice restaurants important or are you looking for avg food at low to avg cost.
?
Try VRBO.com for short term rentals. Can't always get 2 or 4 days, but look see in the areas you are looking fore.
Little more info will help with suggestions.

Thank you for your reply. We will be in Colorado Springs from July 30 to Aug 1, 2009. We are more into avg food at low to avg cost. We actually like the little cabins that have kitchenettes, so we can do some of our own cooking.
We enjoy outdoor activities, but are open to ideas.

If your kids haven't been to Great Sand Dunes NP you could hit that on your way down from Colorado Springs. Take 160 west from I 25 then 159 down towards the Red River, Taos area I think the route changes its number in New Mexico. Another nice day trip would be to go down to Bandelier NM. Neat park with ancient dwellings carved into hardened volcanic ash.

NE - Deb used to live in the area so she's a great one to get advice from.
Red River is primarily a ski resort, but you should be able to find some condos with kitchens as an alternative if you can't find cabins. We prefer Taos because there are a lot more options and it's a great little town where you can walk most anywhere. There's plenty to do in 2-4 days: Rio Grande Gorge, Pueblo de Taos, hiking options, even day trip to Chama to take the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (well worth the trip).

We've stayed several times in Red River at the Edelweiss Condos. You can get a condo with 2 or 3 bedrooms and kitchen. Also they have a nicely heated pool.
We drive to the Taos area for rafting and we do some hiking. The town of Red River is very small and easily walkable, which we like. You can walk to shops and restaurants. There is horseback riding and golf in the area also. It's a beautiful area.

Santa Fe to Taos is about 65 mi. and is a beautiful drive. If you've never been to SF and don't think you'll be going back anytime soon, it's definitely worth a trip (although a couple of days is obviously better). I don't think you'd be adding a lot of time on the road. I'd certainly consider it if you're planning on 4 days in NM, but not if it's as little as 2.
