Trenton, New Jersey from Philly (Day trip?)
I will be visiting Philadelphia mid-April. One hobby of mine is to visit all 50 state capitols. (Already have Harrisburg and Annapolis)Is Trenton an easy day trip from Philly? Looks like about two hour drive. Other than the Capitol building, anything else to do there? If not, could I combine a swing through Valley Forge with a run over to Trenton. I know what some people think of New Jersey, but being this close to Trenton, I can check one more city off the list. Thanks.

Driving Phila. to Trenton should take about 90 minutes or less(depending on time of day). Since your goal is to see state capitols, if you head to Trenton you could visit the Capitol building, then head to the Lambertville/Frenchtown area (very close to Trenton) or head into New Hope area or other Bucks County locales. Doylestown is home to the James Michener Museum (check the website for Museum hours). These locations are much closer to Trenton than a swing through Valley Forge.

You can get to Trenton by taking the SEPTA R7 train. Dur to the rail power, you will need to pick up the R7 Trenton train at 30th Street Station on the weekends. The fare from Philadelphia to Trenton is $7.0o and the trip takes about 45 minutes. Definitely faster than driving.

The Chambersburg section of Trenton has good, authentic Italian restaurants. You can try Chiantis or Amici Milano. Of course south-Philly also has great Italian restaurants.
The Trenton Thunder is a NY Yankees AA baseball team. The games are great fun and very family oriented. www.trentonthunder.com
Outside of Trenton, I would definitely recommend a visit to New Hope, PA and/or Lambertville, NJ. Both are about 15 miles north of Trenton and have great restaurants and shops. New Hope has more night life than Lambertville.
Unless traveling during peak evening rush hour, Philly to Trenton won't take more than 45 minutes by car.

I used to work in Trenton, and it never took me more than 30 minutes to get there.
You might want to check out the Trent House (historical site) and Washington's Crossing Park (on the PA side) as part of your day. Princeton is nearby, too, with a lovely campus, a wonderful art museum, and some nice places to eat.

If you like museums, the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton is pretty good and within walking distance of the State House. It has permanent and temporary art and history exhibitions and a planetarium.

I believe it will take less than a hour to drive from Philadelphia to Trenton. I went to college in Ewing which is just 10 minutes from Trenton. I agree with a previous post...if you like baseball, you may want to check out a Trenton Thunder baseball game. You can probably get great seats, and prices for tickets and food were so much less than major league parks. Although I can't think of the name now, there is a bar in Trenton where they brew many different kinds of beer...and they also have some great live jazz. We really enjoyed going there. If you are interested I will look for the name of the place and post another reply. Although I would not go out of my way to head back to Trenton, I think you can find enough to do to fill a day there. I also agree with a previous post...you need to be careful and aware of your surroundings while visiting.
