Travelling from Maine to Niagara Falls

We will be traveling from Maine to Niagara Falls on May 23rd and need to be in Niiagara Falls on the 24th. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where we can stay on the 23rd, somewhere midway or so? It could be in the mountains or by a lake or historic area.
Thanks.

Depending on where in Maine, I would shoot for someplace between Glens Falls and Albany New York. Plenty of history there and Saratoga Lake.

Thks for your replies. I guess I should have mentioned that we will be starting out in Kennebunkport.

From Kennebunkport, googlemaps will probably take you down 95 to 290 to 90, which without any traffic will probably be the fastest route by a small amount 9 -10 hours. I would suggest that you go a more interesting route through NH and VT. Put Burlington VT in as a mid point then Niagra Falls if you googlemap it and you will go south a bit and then pick up NH rt 9 (I'm not sure if this is the same road as ME 9) which turns into NY 7 when you hit NY. From there you can get to 87 then pick up 90 near Albany. Albany is not quite half way to Niagra Falls.

There are plenty of nice places along the route, but unless you have all day on the 24 th to drive I would want to be at least to the Albany/Lake George area for the night.

Have a safe trip.
