I will be going to a Yankees game on Wednesday night Aug. 1st with 2 10yr olds. We are staying in Newark for the week. What is the best and safest mode of transportation to and from the game?

Sorry, but WHY are you staying in Newark? It will cost you so much more getting into and out of the city from there, and if you are going to a Yankees Game, that will probably be over somewhere between 10-11pm if there are no extra innings. You may have to take a cab back to your hotel which will cost ALOT, depending on where you are staying. The buses and path trains may stop after midnight or be running few and far between.

wow! Getting back to Newark after a Yankee night game using public transportation is darn near impossible.the first leg (getting to the Port Authority Bus Terminal) is easy as you can use the subway but finding a bus at that hour will be difficult as they don't run that often (or maybe not at all). Even if you could catch a bus chances that it will stop near your hotel might be remote and you don't want to be walking the streets of Newark that late at night.

You could take a cab if you could find one that is willing to go to Newark (finding one might be a challenge). Your other alternative is to arrange for a car service to meet you outside the Stadium and tae you back to your hotel. Lastly, you could rent a car and park at the stadium and drive yourself to the hotel. This is probably your best option as you can leave the game early if your 10 year olds get tire or if the game goes into extra innings and you want to leave.

Of course, if you stay at a hotel in mid-town manhattan you could do what the majority of the fans do and take the subway to/from the game.

Is someone holding a gun to your head and making you stay in Newark for a week?

If not cancel those plans and look for another hotel in a better location. Newark/Elizabeth has one of the highest violent crime rates in the US.

Do you have to stay in New Jersey? If you are staying there to save money, you'll spend at least $100 each way on a cab to the game.

Public transportation (NJ Transit and subway) will cost you $16 per person each way ($14 for NJ Transit and $2 for the subway) and take you at least one and a half hours (30-45 minutes NJ Transit/Air Train to NY Penn Station, 15 minutes to switch to subway to Times Square, another 10 to the S train to Grand Central and about 40 on the #4 train to Pelham).

Thanks for the concern, but I'm obviously staying in Newark for a reason. I am working and my kids are in hockey camp. I do have a car, so would it be best to drive?

I would drive. Taking public transportation will involve a lot of different modes of transport plus some walking in between. I assume the game is home at Yankee Stadium? If so, you can just take the GWB back to the NJ Turnpike, which goes right to Newark. It's only about 20 miles each way, on major roads. It'll save you lots of headache!

DO NOT try and take the car over to the Stadium and try to find a parking place. The whole area is more like a HUGE parking lot with traffic just NOT MOVIING after the game.

A better option would be to park in Manhattan on 155th St in site of the stadium (between St. Nicholas and St. Nicholas Place, yes I know a bit confusing), there is a garage, and you can park there and walk over the bridge to the stadium and back after the game. There will be TONS of other people walking across the bridge as well, so you shouldn't worry about safety. If you don't want to park in a garage, there will be parking early on St Nicholas Place, but get here early, lots of other people have found out this little trick.

Take the GWB and at the exit for the Harlem River Drive take it.

Follow directions and road to the exit that says 155th St and St. Nicholas.

At light turn right to garage.

Getting back onto the GWB, go back down the exit and very quickly merge to your left into traffic, it is a QUICK merge, but it takes you right back over the GWB.

Might I suggest an option that is both fun and makes your life somewhat easier. Take the NY Waterway Ferry "The Yankee Clipper."

If you catch it in Hoboken, the pickup time is around 5:20. There are several lots in Hoboken for your car. (You could also take it from Port Imperial, which is near Edgewater. Parking there as well.)

The cost is $18 per adult and $14 per child. The boat docks near the Stadium and leaves after the game. (Not sure what happens if it becomes an extra inning marathon.)

I think this fits your definition of best and safest. Not the most cost effective, but maybe the most interesting for two ten year olds.

Absolutely drive to the game. That way there's no need for you to go near Manhattan - and find multiple public transits at that hour (it's unlikely you'll be out of the stadium before 10:30. That said - double check the yankees web site a day or so before you go - since parking options have changed due to construction of the new stadium next door. (Even before that you needed to leave at lesat 30 minutes from getting off the highway to actually parking the car - will probably be longer now.)

Your route will be over the GWB - but you need to get off onto the Major Deegan heading south immediately you hit the Bronx.

As for Newark - obviously you choose it for a reason. Just be aware that some areas are VERY high crime - and make sure you've picked a hotel in a good location.
