traveling alone...relaxing ideas?
HI,
Been checking out the boards for some time and you all give such great suggestions, thought I'd post a question. I was supposed to go to Grand Cayman Nov 4-12, but of course, that has been cancelled. Now I'm left with a weeks vacation and no traveling buddies. Any ideas for a beach hotel close to restaurants etc(don't want to rent a car)
I just love the ocean, don't mind having to wear a sweatshirt, just love to look at the ocean and hear it. Not into nightlife, just some R & R. Any ideas?

I love the ocean too, especially hearing it. How about Virginia Beach? Most of the beachfront hotels run lengthwise along the ocean, so that each room is ocean-view. If you live in Amtrak's northeast corridor, you can catch a train/coach ride to 19th & Pacific, just a block from the beach. Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is served by low cost Southwest & Independence airlines, but you'd need to take a taxi or shuttle to the beach, or a public bus from a stop about 1 mi from the airport.
I've gone to VAB in February, turned off the heat in the room & left the balcony door open all night to listen to that surf. Ain't it relaxing?

Carslbad or Del Mar just north of San Diego are beautiful beach towns that are very quiet during November. You should be able to find a nice hotel right on the beach (Best Western has a nice beach front property in Del Mar)at a reasonable price. There is several good restaurants, shops, and downtown San Diego is just a quick 20 minute train ride on the Coaster. Both towns are very scenic and safe for a solo traveler. I know you will love it.

My favorite beach destination is Oahu. I went there for 2 weeks - alone - last year and it was the best trip I've ever had. I found a gem of a little hotel nestled right in the middle of Waikiki, close to everything. The beach was at the end of the block, Kalakaua - the main drag, so to speak - was steps away, shops, restaurants are steps away, The Bus runs just outside the back gate. No need to rent a car unless you want to drive to other parts of the island. I felt safe the entire time and had a blast doing what I wanted, when I wanted. I took a few good books with me and read all of them! I'm sure you'll have a great time wherever you decide to go.

The Oregon Coast is truly beautiul, however I don't know how you would get there without a car.
There is a bus out of Portland but that might be inconvenient.--
I travel alone alot and I would try VB or San Diego depending on your geographical location.
Good Luck

If you flew into Tampa airport, there are shuttles you can take to the beaches, or a taxi for about $30. From there, there is a beach shuttle (basically a bus w/AC that looks like a trolley car) that runs along the beaches btwn. Clearwater and Passe-A-Grille. I think it's $1.50 one way, or they have a pass but don't know how much it is, nor for how long. You could stay at any of the beach towns, including St. Pete Beach, Passe-A-Grille, Indian Rocks, Redington, or Treasure Island.

Just another choice in the San Diego area is Coronado Island. The place is breathtaking. Beautiful beach, unique shops, excellent restaurants, nice scenery and it is only a few minutes from downtown San Diego and the airport. You can take the Coronado Ferry service to go to downtown San Diego and view of the city is wonderful on your way there. The Hotel del Coronado is spectacular to stay in. The Hotel Cortez is also nice and less expensive than de Del.

I live in Oregon and yes, the coast is great but without a car it would be really tough.
I would have to agree with the Coronado recommendation though. Boy, you can just plant me right there at the Del and I am happy as a clam So relaxing!!!

Take a short cruise. If you're getting really close to the sailing date, there are bargains to be had.
You can just sit on the deck and read, knowing there's good food waiting, and you'll be somewhere warm, and you can take a shore trip to a beach where it's warm enough to swim.
