Definitely leave in the morning or late at night.
I agree. The earlier in the morning you can leave, the better. Traffic will probably peak between 4 and 7 (just like a weekday rush, although not as bad).
I agree with Howard and Jason. Sunday afternoon traffic between Providence and New Haven is usually terrible: two lanes, people returning from Cape Cod, and inevitably an accident blocking traffic somewhere along this stretch
Travel early, before 8 am if possible . Traffic will be get much worse as the day progresses, (assuming this is before Labor Day) as people go to beaches in Connecticut, Rhode Island.
Should take about 3 1/2 hours assuming average traffic on the roads leading into the city--which route are you planning on taking?
4-7PM should not be as bad as a regular weekday--noone would be coming into the city (NYC) that time on a Sunday--no theater/concerts/museums open for the tourists, and New Yorkers coming home from a weekend away will not yet be on the road (Peak time for that on a Sunday night would be 8 or 9pm till 11pm or midnight)
Thanks for all the responses- I was worried about the New Haven to NY traffic. I did not realize there would be so much traffic from RI border to New Haven.
Trip should take 3 hours or so. The earlier you arrive in the city thev less traffic you are likely to encounter. Where you are going in the city is a factor to consider. The Cross BRonx Expressway could pose a major problem and, if possible, should be avoided. Indicate your destination and alternative routes can be suggested. The CBX can be backed up for miles from the GW BRidge to the NE Thruway
