Travel Route with trailer: SoCal to Sheridan, WY

Wondering if anyone has advice for best route from Southern California to Sheridan, WY? I will be hauling 4 horses so am hoping for less mountainous route and looking for places to turnout horses overnight...Thanks for your help!

Use google map or www.viamichelin.com and specify the fastest route which will take you on the Interstate and will probably be the least mountainous route.

Boy, this sure is one of the most interesting and unique travel posts I've seen in a long time.

Not sure where in SoCal you are starting but Interstate 8
has a big grade going East just out of San Diego via El Cajon & after that it is pretty flat.

Instead of I8 East, when I drove a car from San Diego to Cody WY, I went thru Las Vegas for first night (have no idea about horse turnouts)then Salt Lake 2nd night, Landers WY 3rd night and then into Cody on 4th night. As I recall Salt Lake had a small grade and so did Landers. But I think you can go further east up to Buffalo which is just south of Sheridan and bypass Landers.

This link might help for a route. I don't know of any resource that references grade: you may have to look up each hiway, talk with the State Transportation people for each road. Maybe AAA can help with tiktrip?

Since then I have driven my Dad from Cody WY over the Big Horn Mountains (elevation 4000+ with huge grades, narrow 2 lane roads with cows standing on them or deer or moose) and into Sheridan for MD appts. Do not recommend this route. Would be better to go all the way up to Billings I80 to Sheridan; very, very little little grade.

I would also look at some RVing websites. They review campgrounds, and some campgrounds have facilities for horses. More importantly, they will talk about routes with a trailer or RV.

I hope so too. My in-laws were fulltime RVers for several years, so that is why I thought of it. In a passenger car, you don't always think about how challenging some routes would be with a big trailer.
