Transportation to Yellowstone/Jackson in Winter

Jump to last reply

Hello! My husband and I are traveling to Yellowstone in December. We have reservations to stay at Old Faithful Lodge (accessible via snowcoach). However, our arrival into Jackson Hole's airport (at noon) is too late to make the Flagg Ranch snowcoach pickup (at 1pm). So, it looks like we will be spending the first night outside of the park and arranging transport to Flagg Ranch the next morning.

I have several questions... Do you think that spending the night in Jackson Hole is the best option (I've been told most people do this)? What about Moran? My husband is an expert skier and I have skied twice in my life. If it were up to me, I'd rather do anything but ski. :D Snowshoeing, dog sledding, snow mobiling, etc. are more appealing to me.

Another question is about transportation. I have discovered two options:

Option 1:
Alltrans is a transport company that will pick us up from the airport or Jackson Hole and drop us off at the Flagg Ranch pick-up station. The problem is that a 2-way ticket (one that will drop us at Flagg Ranch and then, pick us up and take us to the airport) will cost us a combined total of $200. This does not include transport from the airport to the hotel or from the hotel to any activities we might do.

Option 2:
For that price, we could rent a car from the airport, drive ourselves to the hotel/inn, etc. for the first night and then leave the car at Flagg Ranch (can we do this? Is there a place to park a rental car for 3 days in Flagg Ranch?) while we visit Yellowstone. Then when the snowcoach returns us to Flagg Ranch, we're able to drive it back to the airport.

Are there any other options besides these? I've looked around for an overnight dog-sled tour that would get us from the airport to Flagg Ranch by 1pm. But, I cannot find a suitable one (most leave at 6am in the morning from Jackson and we do not arrive at the airport until noon).

What about snowmobiling? Is there a company that will get us from the airport directly to Old Faithful Lodge after the park's snowcoach pickup?

Surely more people have arrived in Jackson Hole too late for the 1pm Snowcoach pick-up. What did you do?

Thank you for your time and any advice you might have. :)
