Transportation to NYC from Newark

My husband and I will be flying into Newark on a Saturday in March. We need to get to the Radisson on Lexington Avenue, in NYC. What's the best way to do this? Should we use the Airtran (sp?) from Newark Airport, go to Penn Station, and then take a cab to the hotel? Or, is there some other way that would be cheaper and/or faster? I would appreciate any advice you can offer on this b/c we'll also want the best way to get back to Newark when we have to fly out early on a Tuesday morning. Thanks!

Just SLIGHTLY cheaper ($11) is the Olympia airport bus (see http://www.coachusa.com/airporterusa...cation_id=1126 or http://www.olympiabus.com/

Most likely the bus will take longer, but has compartments underneath for your luggage, where the train can be Amtrak or NJTransit commuter train, where you'd want to be traveling light. Also no stairs to contend with on the bus, which stops just NW of Penn Station.

I noticed on the website, "free for kids" - a consideration for families, and also "Save 25% on your Gray Line Double Decker Tour!", but didn't check that link.

If you pick up your luggage at the luggage carrousel, walk out the door - there is a line of taxis waiting. They will take your destination, tell it to the driver, tell you how much. It is safe, easy, fast and much less trouble than hauling luggage with you.

Following based on 2 people traveling
Taxi- EwR to hotel - fastest way, close to $50
Airtrain to taxi to hotel - not as fast as taxi. Cost - around $35
Airport bus to 41st and Park, taxi to hotel - around $32 - slowest way

The CHEAPEST way is to take the Olympia bus to Lexington and 41st. Then walk to the hotel (6 short blocks). This would be an easy option if your bags have wheels. Total cost: $11 per person. The website claims the ride is 45-60 minutes.

Just did this last week and loved the train into Penn Station. At EWR, take the aitrain (monorial) to the Rail Link station, purchase ticket from machine with credit card ($11.55 OW on NJ Transit, more on Amtrak). Great if you have minimal bags, still OK with rollaboard type luggage (there are elevators) but if you have a lot of bags it could be a hassle and cab would be better option.
Delivers you to NY Penn Station in about 20 minutes, with only one brief stop at Newark Penn Station. From there you can walk (if you are feeling energetic and want to navigate through Times Square, which I wouldn't advise) or cab to the Radisson at 511 Lexington betwen E 47 & E 48th for probably $5 or less.
Note that on return to EWR the cab fare is usually higher. Cabs out of EWR are on a controlled fare schedule, but NYC cabs into EWR are on the meter plus tolls, usually run $60+ in moderate traffic.

There are also car service companies in the city that for a set price will pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel and vice-versa. I would call to make sure of your trip back to the airport.

I usually use (212) 505-0555. There is also Carmel and I think the number is (212) 666-6666.

Have a great time.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I have been checking more websitses, and I called the hotel this morning. The concierge told me that coming from Newark, I should take a cab to the hotel because it would be a flat rate of $35.00. I asked her if this would include tolls, and she said again, it was a flat rate of $35.00.

Does anyone else agree with this? I would happy if this is true b/c it would make things very easy for only 2 people with luggage. And, it would only be a few dollars more than the bus fare for 2 people (I checked www.olympiabus.com). She also told me not to use a cab to get back to the airport b/c I would pay metered rates.

If anyone has any more suggestions or knows more about the "flat rate" for the cab, please respond again. You are all so helpful and I can't wait to get to NYC!!!!

I believe there is a flat rate, BUT "flat rates" in NYC never include tolls
(here it's $6 to get into Manhattan from NJ via bridge or tunnel) plus tip (figure on $5-$6 based on $35 rate), so you're looking at a real total of about $47. IMHO, it's still the way to go.

Train is great for one person, or two without real luggage, or if you're staying right by Penn Station. It can be tough to get a cab at Penn Station (yes, there is a dispatch line, but sometimes there will be a line of 50 or more people waiting)plus if it's traffic-y, the $5 or so metered fare to the hotel could get closer to $10.
Unless you're really trying to save every dollar, the cab (or car services mentioned--comparable price) is the easiest way to go

Lee, just checked the official Newark Website for info on flat rates:

http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/ewrtaxiframe.html

They are higher than you were quoted:
$45 for locations in Manhattan between 35th and 58th streets PLUS "$5 for east side locations". This brings it up to $50 plus toll ($6) and tip (more like $6-7) = $62-63

At that rate, I'd go with a car service. You can call them from the airport. If you're flying Continental, check their inflight magazine, they often has ads for discounts on car services (I know I've see the ads for Carmel car service, which also lists a toll free number so you don't have to call a NYC number from NJ)

Nyer, thanks for your information. I actually checked Newark's website earlier today and found 2 different rates--one around $35.00 and one that goes anywhere from $45 to $60. I'm not sure why one link says the lower price and one link (on the same website) says a higher price. My husband also called our hotel and talked with a different concierge, who also told us the $35.00 rate.

Since we are not leaving until March, I know I've got time to figure this out. I will try the taxi route by first asking the dispatcher about the flat rate. If it's too high, we may go with the bus or airtrain. We'd prefer the taxi since we'll probably have one medium/large suitcase and one pilot case. Thanks to all of you for your input!

We took a taxi and the flat rate was $50 to midtown Manhattan plus tolls ($8). We took a car service that the hotel arranged back to Newark for a flat fee of $60 including tolls. We were freezing in a long line waiting for a tiny taxi. The car service was much nicer. I've taken a shuttle before and don't recommend it. We considered the train, but didn't want to hassle with luggage and getting a cab at Penn Station. Arranging a car service would be the fastest and easiest way to go, but not the cheapest.

MLF,
Thanks for your information. Can you tell me how you found out about Grey Line and/or where to find them at Newark Airport? Also, how much do they cost per person? I've seen some information on the Newark Airport website about Olympia buses but I'm having trouble finding Grey line.

As a long time resident of New York, I've been faced with this question many times. And I've done some investigating of my own over the years.

As with all the airports in New York City, the absolutely cheapest way to go is to take public transportation. Here's how you get to and from Newark using public transit:

Take the Newark city public bus from the airport to Penn Station Newark. The bus stops at all the terminals. It costs less than $2 per person (I forget the exact amount, but there is a transportation information desk at the airport that will give you all of the information). At Penn Station Newark you take the PATH train to New York, $1.50 per person. The entire trip takes about an hour, sometimes less if you catch a bus right away. The PATH makes stops from Greenwich Village up to 34th Street and Ave. of the Americas. There are stairs, so depending on how much time you have and whether or not you mind the inconvenience, it's a lot easier on the pocketbook.

Next is the $11 Airport bus described by others on this thread. They leave regularly and are reliable.

Next is the train. I don't know what people are talking about when they complain about stairs with the train. There is an escalator down to the Amtrak station at Penn Station New York, and elevators to the platforms at Newark Airport. You do have to put your luggage up on a rack in the train, but that's not a terrible inconvenience.

If you do take a car service from the airport, remember that they will also charge you for parking their car at the airport (I don't know how much this is at Newark). Also, I've occasionally had problems with airport pick-ups from car services -- especially late at night. Make sure you call to confirm your reservation the day of your trip.

Good luck!

The train most people take as the "airtrain" is NJ Transit, not Amtrak. Amtrak costs about twice as much as NJ transit ($20.00+ vs, $11.00) for the same 15 minute trip. It's a bit of a hassle to get around the monorail and access the trains and then navigate through Penn Station if you have more than a small roll-on suitcase
