I will be in New York City in a few weeks and will be attending a evening game at Yankee stadium. I plan on taking the subway to the game, but I was wondering if anyone had any sugggestions about transportation back to my hotel on 42nd street after the game. Would a cab be safe? Any idea how much the fare would be? Any info would be appreciated!

It'll be far easier to get a subway back into Manhattan - 50,000 Yankee fans attend every game, so there should be no concern about riding the subway back - you'll be in large groups of normal, every day New Yorkers heading home after the gams.

THe traffic after the game will be a MESS, and not moving at all, and cabs will be non existent.

I would suggest if you want to avoid some of the people traffic, walk over the 155th St bridge, over the Harlem River and walk up to the 155th St subway station at St. Nicholas and catch the train there. That's the C train which goes down the west side and if you are staying in Times Square the train stops at 42nd and 8th Ave.

The other option is to take the D train from Yankee Stadium which also goes down the west side. The D is an express train and will stop at 6th and 42nd St.

Have a great time and enjoy the city.

Not sure the origin of your question. There will be thousands of other people leaving the game just like you and going in the subway.

The alternative is the Yankee Clipper, the ferry that goes up and down the Hudson.

Subway, subway, subway. It's the easiest and fastest way to get back. You don't say where on 42nd street your hotel is, but the 4,5 goes straight from Yankee Stadium to Grand Central. If you are on the east side, you're good. From there, you could take the shuttle to Times Square if your hotel is further west.

You won't even be able to get a cab at the stadium after the game.

Just agreeing with the rest, taking the subway home after a baseball game is perfectly safe. The trains will be full of Yankee's fans riding into NYC.

I think there is some kind of ferry service also available, but I don't know anyone who has done that.

The Subway is the only option that makes sense.

If your hotel is near Grand Central, you can take the 4 Train to and from the Stadium.

If your hotel is near Times Square, you can take the D train instead.

You will not be able to hail a cab outside the Stadium after the game.

Another definite -- subway.

The MTA does a good job sending extra trains after the games, and most are virtully empty when they pull up to the Stadium.

Cab is not an option since you won;t find one. Cabs in NYC are almost always found in Manhattan south of 96th St and at the airports. There simply aren;t enough to serve the rest of the city - which has local car services. Your chance of picking up one of these after the game is essentially nil.

So your choice is subway (which is what I would do) or car service. You would have to call one when the game ends and then wait for it to arrive. My guess (on no experience) is that the cost would be about $40 or so - plus waiting time until you connect with them. You can check Carmel or Tel Aviv to see what they might charge - but it's really a waste of money.

Another recommendation for the subway. Three years ago we stayed near Times Square (with our two kids), went to an evening Yankees game, took the subway back. No problems whatsoever. Definitely the way to go!

Thanks to everyone for all of your suggestions. I was concerned, because I was told by a tour guide last year that I should avoid the subway after 10pm. Are any of you New York residents who have done this after an evening game?

My 15 y.o. son has taken the subway home after Mets games at midnight with his friends. It's not the Bronx (it's Queen's) but it's similar.

I know tons of people that go to Yankees games by train, we don't because we're Mets fans!

I would call that tour guide "untraconservative" for that after 10 p.m. warning. I can assure you that the subways are still very active and safe for at least an hour after that time.

I've done it dozens of times. Seriously. I agree that the tour guide was causing unnecessary worry. Crime in the subway is at an all-time low. While I don't feel comfortable being on an almost-empty subway car or platform at any time of the day, there will be literally thousands of people getting onto the subway at the stadium and heading back into Manhattan with you. It will be standing room only. You have nothing to worry about (assuming you take the usual precautions to avoid pickpockets).

That's ridiculous, on any night, but particularly after a Yankees game when 30,000 people ride the subways.

I'm a single male who doesn't hesitate to ride the subways 24/7 within Manhattan.

Hey if it wasn’t after a Yankee game I wouldn’t be taking the subway in the Bronx either after 10. Or before for that matter. But after a game? You’ll be fine. In fact you will have quite a wait to even get on the platform. It is an absolute nightmare to take a car out of there after a game. You will be in your hotel room while people are still trying to get their cars on the highway. But the 5 train doesn’t go. Take the 4 – it’s fun because it will also be full of Yankee fans on the way up. A guy next to me on the ride home one night had caught a home run – you should have seen him clutching that ball. He was magically 8 years old again!

I went to a Friday night game in June. There was a rain delay and many fans left. I stuck it out to the end. When I boarded the subway at midnight it was full of Yankees fans and perfectly obviously safe. Same can be said for the walk from the stadium to and through the station.

I always would want to chastise a tour guide for warning people about subways after 10 PM. How else to get anywhere after the theater (or any other event that drops a huge amount of people all in the same place at the same time)? I took the subway to and from Lincoln Center on two recent visits, and the subway was full of audience members dispersing

I am a female living here who has often taken the subway, many times alone, after a Yankee game. Absolutly no worries about safety, either to the train, on the train, or walking around in Manhattan at midnight. None at all. We have a car here in the city and still take the train to avoid all the parking mess around the stadium. There are lots of car guys that hang out after the games and offer rides but I can't imagine why you would need to use them unless you had a mobility problem.
