Transportation, Portland Or to Salem Or

We are staying in Portland for a week and would like to see the capital Salem for one day.
Need to find transportation in the morning to Salem returning at supper time. Will not have a car.
Any help would be appreciated.

Either rent a car for 1 day or take the late afternoon train from the Amtrak station and return on an afternoon train the next day. The first Amtrak bus to Salem leaves at 11:30AM and takes 1 hour.
There are a lot of things you want to see out of Portland including the waterfalls and Columbia Gorge.
Portland is a nice city, but I wouldn't spend a week there without a car.

FYI: The Greyhound station is next door to the Amtrak station in Portland. There is a Greyhound bus that leaves daily at 6:30AM. The fare is less than $26/pp. If you want to pay in cash, you can pay at a 7-11 without visiting the ticket window.

Neither of these answers are good for us.
We will not be renting a car and do not want to stay in Salem overnight.
Any other suggestions???????
