Transportation in Dallas?
We are staying at the Adams Mark Hotel in downtown Dallas next month for our first trip to Dallas. Is a rental car necessary for getting around town or is the M Line and Trolley sufficient? We are also interested in making a day trip to Fort Worth.

There is public transportation, but, it would be much easier to get where you want to go much quicker by getting a car. If you are just wanting to stay in one area - your fine, but if you are wanting to move around much - I say get a car!

Honestly, other than in downtown itself, you'll need a car. Dallas is unfortunately not very pedestrian-friendly. You'll definitely need a car for the day trip to Fort Worth. Yes, the train can get you there, but if you're going to the Cultural District or the Stockyards, you'll face either several bus transfers or an expensive cab ride!
Are you staying at the Adam's Mark for a convention? If not, I'd recommend another hotel more on the western side of downtown. The Adam's Mark is over by itself and there's not much on that side of downtown except the Plaza of the Americas.
Safety tip: DO NOT walk from Adam's Mark to/from Deep Ellum after dark. Take a cab.

Definitely, get a car!!! I can't stress that enough. Dallas is a very spread out city.
Public transportation is used mostly by a small percentage of the population to get to/from work.
Please make time to go to Ft Worth and spend some time there during the evening. Even at night, downtown is safe and full of people out enjoying the city. You will NOT want to walk around most of downtown Dallas at night. Ft Worth is a large city with a small, western town feel. You'll get more of what you probably think of as "Texas".

Depends on how long you're staying in Dallas and what you're interested in seeing.
The Arts District is within walking distance from Adams Mark. The Trolley will get you to parts of Uptown. Obviously, you'll need a car to get to FW.

A car is a must for traveling to Fort Worth. Driving through Dallas is not fun and can be confusing if you are not familiar with the area. If public transport is available and cheap for Dallas (& gets you where you need to go)..then go for that.
I recommend visiting the Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth. I've enjoyed going to the Bass Music Hall. They usually have some great shows going on.

I'll second and third the public transportation suggestions. Yes, a car is more practical for visiting the suburbs... but who wants to visit suburbs? They are as generic in Dallas as anywhere else.
And as someone mentioned, many of the visitor destinations in Dallas are downtown within walking distance of on the M Trolley line, or definitely on the DART LRV lines.
For $2.50 you can get a daily pass and easily travel to the usual visitor destinations... shopping at Northpark, the Galleria, Highland Park Village, to the major museums, etc. For the Fair Park area, take a cab.
You don't want to try to drive in an unfamiliar city, let a professional do it for you. Also, riding a city bus is a good way to sightsee... try the #36 northbound from downtown to see the posh park Cities/Preston Road areas. Also try the #8 to see Uptown/Oak Lawn districts. The aforementioned trolley is a good way to see east Uptown area.
For transportation to the city zoo, take the DART Red Line LRT train going south.
Also, take a train to Fort Worth. Part of the fun of the train is the experience and the sights you'll see. Once in downtown FW you can take one of their trolleybuses to the museum district or to the Stockyards, and sightsee some more on the way. In a car, you have your eyes on the road trying to figure out where you're going.
