Transportation from Newark airport to Secaucus

What is the best way to get from Newark airport to Secaucus--plane gets into Newark after 5PM and I had thought to use Bus #78 Newark to Secaucus/Harmon Meadow/Plaza Dr but it has it's last time at 3PM. I need a plan B to get to my hotel on Plaza Drive in Secaucus without using a taxi--is there such a thing???

Why not call the hotel and ask them?

Is the bus you are referring to from the AIRPORT - or from Newark (a place you don;t want to go)?

And what will you do at that hotel without a car?

I need a bus to take us from the Newark airport to Seacaucus hotelon PlazaDr about 6pm or so--no need for a car as there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel which takes us to the train station nearby and then into NYC. Thought some New Jerseyite would know the answer to this but may have to call the hotel if not. Worth a try.

What day of the week do you arrive?

You could take a bus to Manhattan and switch to a bus to Secaucus. While involving only one change of transport, it would mean two trips through the Lincoln Tunnel, especially tedious if you arrive on a weekday during rush hour.

This bus route map for Hudson County may help you discern some other bus rutes that might connect without going through Manhattan.

(I know how to spell "routes"--I just don't know how to type.)

Frankly, I've looked into a few routes. Virtually all route suggestions involved taking a bus or train all the way to Manhattan and traveling from there to Secaucus, taking almost two hours to do so without factoring in tunnel traffic.

I think you should look into hiring a private car service. You are probably saving a significant amount of money by staying in Secaucus so you can use some of your savings to arrange a private car. With a private car, you will know the cost upfront when you reserve the trip.

I would not expect a hotel there to have a shuttle. They may know a better route via train and then bus - but we don;t know exactly the location of the hotel. they are your best resource.

Typically trains and buses in NJ are hub and spoke in an out of Manhattan - where most people want to go.

Can you provide the name of the hotel - so people can check it - but I wold have stated there?

I thought NJ Transit had a train from Newark Airport to Secaucus, but I don't take NJT often enough to know for sure. If it does, perhaps the hotel has a shuttle from the Secaucus station, or at least send a taxi for you to meet your train.

NJ Transit trains usually stop at Secaucus junction, where you have to take a taxi in all likelihood. You pay about $12 per person. I have no idea if there may be bus service to the hotel but that's possible. Some hotels have on demand shuttles to the train station.

You could also take a shared van for about the same price probably direct to the hotel.

You really do need to ask the hotel directly though just to be sure.

Thanks all for your advice...the extended stay america hotel is at 1 plaza drive and has a bus stop right in front. If I can get a train from Newark airport to the Secaucus junction and then a bus to the hotel that would work.

Again, ask the hotel. These buses are geared to commuters and not tourists, so they may not run often, if at all, outside regular commuting hours.

Yes, you are traveling in commuter hours, but your arrival time has you traveling in the opposite direction of the commute—-toward Manhattan--so fewer options may be available.

If you consult the bus route map link previously sent, you can see the possible bus choices from Secaucus Junction train station that travel near your hotel.

It looks like it would be possible for you to do this:
1. Airtrain from Newark Airport to Newark Airport train station.
2. NJ Transit Northeast Corridor train two stops to Secaucus Junction.
3. Bus 129 toward NYC and get off at a stop on Paterson Plank Rd as close to your hotel as possible.
4. Walk about half a mile underneath busy highway interchanges to your hotel.

129 bus schedule here. Note that the Extended Stay hotel on the schematic route map at this link is NOT yours. Your would be to the right (on this map) of Town Hall.
