Transportation from Fort Lauderdale to Melbourne FL
I am attending a conference in Fort Lauderdale in March 2006 and would like to go to the Melbourne area to see family afterward. Does anyone know if there is a way to get there without renting a car and driving myself? I really hate highway driving, especially where I am not familiar with the area. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Rent a car and drive up AIA. It is a gorgeous drive and not a highway. Runs along the ocean.
Don't blame you about highway driving. I-95 is the worst and while the Turnpike is much better, it is still interstate.
Can't think of any public transporation you'd want to use aside from maybe Amtrak.

Unfortunately, Melbourne is not served by Amtrak - those trains are routed through Orlando. Also unfortunately, flying within Florida at that time of year will be pricey. The only other option I can think of is Greyhound - the bus station in Melbourne is located at the airport.

You cant drive the entire way up A1A..I know in Vero it stops and you have to divert to US1. Also A1A is notoriously slow and has many police with radar. You will only go about 30-40 MPH. Stick with the FL turnpike. The fact that you have to pay about $15 in tolls keeps alot of the crazy uninsured drivers off it...

You can take "Tri-Rail" from FLL to as far north as Palm Beach ... after that you're back to car rentals or "the Dog" (Greyhound).
Agree that A1A can be pretty but pretty expensive if you fall prey to speedtraps and other enforcements.

Thanks for all the help. A friend told me about Florida Coastal Airlines that would fly me to Melbourne for about $100 total. Have any of you heard of them? Are they considered reliable in terms of maintenance and safety especially?
