transportation from Dulles or National to downtown DC

Hi...planning a first trip to DC and was wondering what the best mode of transportation to get from the airport to a hotel located in downtown DC? Is there a flat rate taxi fare for airport transportation? Does the Metro run direct...or how many transfers? What about airport shuttles....anyone know their prices for adult and children? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Tia,
The best way to get from those airports to downtown would be a shuttle van. Taking a cab will run you at least 40 bucks per person while the blue van shuttles are about 17-20 per person. You can take the metro to downtown DC from national but its a hassle to haul your luggage on those trains.

Hi Tia. National is much closer to DC than Dulles is. The metro stops right at National, but there is no metro stop at Dulles. So from National you can take the metro into the city very easily. I find it very convenient, but then I travel light with very little luggage. If you have a lot of luggage, you can take a cab. There is a cab stand right outside the terminals at National and the cost into the city is not a flat rate, it varies depending on where you're going, but generally costs me around $15 into downtown (plus extra for more than one passenger, plus extra for each bag the driver handles for you).
Dulles is another story. I usually take the aforementioned shuttle vans into the city if I'm arriving at Dulles. You share a van with several other people and it's very cost effective as long as you don't mind riding around for a while while they drop people off at various hotels.

There is a commuter rail that runs between BWI airport, and Union Station in DC. It runs about every 40 minuts, and is very inexpensive, about $6 each way. The one catch is that it only runs weekdays. On weekends, you'll need to use Amtrack (about $16) or a shuttle van (the hotel can arrange this). Go to BWI's web site for more info.

If you have a group (a couple of adults and kids, which it sounds like you might), it would probably be as cheap to take a cab from either airport as it would be to take a shuttle. I don't know the cost of the shuttles, but whenever I've priced them other places, they often become more expensive than a cab ride after you get to three people traveing together. You might be able to find links to airport info, including shuttle prices, through the Washington Post website, www.washingtonpost.com. In fact, their travel section this Sunday had the annual round-up of travel info, including info on shuttles from all three area airports.

Re the metro into downtown, whether you have to transfer or not depends upon where your hotel is. If it's near Dupont Circle, you'll have to transfer. If it's in Georgetown, you'll have to walk a number of blocks from the metro.
