Train to the Hamptons

would like to go to the Hamptons for a day trip at the end of May, is there a train that goes there, instead of taking the bus.
Any info much appreciated,

Yes, there is a train - but it doesn't run very often and a day trip is just not a realistic options - either train or bus.(The trip is more than 3 hours in each direction - so you will be in transit the best part of 7 hours - just to get to and fro.) Also, Memorial Day weekend is just when many things start to open for the season - before then many things are still closed.

Plus, once you get there you will need a rental car - or cabs - to get around - unless you want to stay just in the center of one town.

If you rent a car and start VERY early - and pick a nice day it is more doable - but you have to bet the traffic (as in leaving before 7 am and getting home after having dinner out there).

You can do a daytrip although it's a long trip...2 1/2-3 hrs. In each direction. The train which is cheaper than the bus works slightly better for a daytrip going to the Hampton vs. the reverse. I think you will find schedules on weekends work better for a daytrip. You could also train in one direction and bus on the other. East Hampton is the prettiest village and the train station is not far from Main st. You can also walk to a beach from town, although it's a good walk.

Most people with houses out East either drive or take the bus..there are several private bus lines that are very comfortable and have WiFi.

I would not do a RT in one day, though.
