train options from NH to RI

I'm looking for transportatiion options for my parents. They'll be flying into Portsmouth, NH and need to get to Newport, RI. Is there a train from one to the other, should they get to Boston, if so, is there a train from there to Newport.

Looking for help, thank you,

Paul

Amtrack would be the only option in tne Northeast connecting the two destinations and I'm not sure the train stops in Newport, but does go to Providence.

Try the Amtrack website for options for dates and times.

Only realistic option is to rent a car and drive.

Don't mean to be rude, but if they've bought $10 fare on Skybus or other cheap fares on Pan Am or Allegiant, AND if you don't drive, then I suggest they just consider dropping the $20 bill in the trash and start planning the trip over.

But to answer the question, there's no train service to Newport. From PWM, there's a bus service to Boston South Station. Once every 2 hours, takes about 1.5 hr.

From Boston South Station, they can switch to another bus. 5 buses a day, about 1:35.

Including waiting for the buses, you're talking 5-6 hours at the least.

The closest train station to PSM is Dover, NH, about 10 miles away. There are 4 AMTRAK trains a day, taking about 1:10 to Boston North station, so it's another transfer to the bus at South Station.

The closest train station to Newport are Providence and Kingston, RI. There's a public bus from the Providence train station to Newport (#60), but that bus alone takes an hour.

From Portsmouth they can take C&J Trailways into Logan Airport. It has their terminal right at the airport. I am sure there are buses from Logan to RI. MY DH takes that bus all the time, reliable, beautiful and inexpensive!

There is a bus that goes from South Station to Newport. You'd have to google to find it but I'm often at South Station and this bus exists. So they would take the C&J Trailways bus to South Station then another bus from South Station to Newport. Overall this trip will take 4-5 hours.

Other option is to rent a car. Portsmouth to Newport is roughly a 2.5 hour drive.

wyatt - The Peterpan site that I linked to have the schedule for Boston South Station to Newport. It's run by Bonanza Bus, which is now part of Peter Pan.
