Traffic in LA - Getting to Dodgers Stadium

My husband and 2 others are visiting LA for their annual baseball weekend. They have a game to go to at Dodger Stadium at 7p this Friday. They are staying at a hotel near Universal City and will have a car.
Should they drive to the stadium? How long will this trip take, accounting for traffic? If they decide to go by metro rail the nearest stop is in Chinatown, how safe is this area and how should they proceed to the stadium - taxi?
Please LA natives - your advice is needed!

I would check with the hotel - they will be able to give you options.
I visited Chinatown a short while ago, and it seemed very safe to me, but hopefully others local LA fodorites will respond.

There are free shuttles that run from Union Station to Dodger Stadium. You could take the subway from Universal to Union Station.
