Town base usggestions for driving Blue Ridge Prkwy

We are planning a drive/visit on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Fall and need suggestions for where to "base" our trip. We want to visit Linville Carverns, Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock and maybe
Tweetsie RR. We are coming up from N.E. Florida via South Carolina so I am looking for towns
just east and/or south of Asheville. We don't have to spend every night in the same town/city but
would like to start out in that area. Any suggestions of where to stay would be greatly appreciated. I
love B&B's as well are regular hotels so let's hear your recommendations.

ALSO, which week of October/November is your suggestion for us to see foliage?

Isessions, thank you for your suggestions! I was beginning to think no one was going to help.

-Isessions, one question - would you suggest we start
in Blowing Rock and travel south to Asheville area or
Asheville to Blowing Rock?

Coming from the south it would be easier for you to start in Asheville and head north.
You can certainly also go south from asheville (Pisgah Inn is south).
Asheville would be a nice base to explore other parts of western NC such as Hendersonville (apple festival) and Brevard). Cradle of Forestry is in the area of Brevard also.
And of course, Asheville has its own activities.

Gretchen, thanks for your input. We visited Asheville area
in July 2015 so I don't think we will be stopping there.
Do you have any idea how long it would take us to drive the
parkway from Asheville up to Blowing Rock? I'll check out
Pisgah Inn too.

The Pisgah Inn is ON the Parkway and is fairly "plain" type of hotel and dining room run by the BRPkway. We have eaten there and it is pleasant.
It is about 100 miles from Asheville to BR so maybe 2 hours.
I would not think Tweetsie would be particularly interesting unless you have an under 10 year old with you. Fun for our children 40 years ago.
Blowing Rock is a cute little town. Boone is nearby. There is Banner Elk also.
I've sort of lost the thread here.
If it is cloudy, the parkway can be above the clouds with no view below.

There are innumerable charming places to stay in the NC mountains around the BRP.
Weaverville, Burnsville (has a cute hotel with family style meals), Boone, Spruce Pine, Little Switzerland, Fancy Gap, etc. etc.
