You can have Chateau Briand which is always prepared for two. Otherwise, try the "ladies" size portions. And remember, you can have steak (any kind, size) only and don't bother with the sides - potatoes, onions, veggies... they're not necessary. But be aware that some of these establishments may have a minimum per person. I would suggest you call whichever restaurant and ascertain what's available and if there is a minimum.

There is about a 7 or 8 way tie argument about this steak issue in Chicago. Many like Luger's, some like Ruth Chris etc. etc. Check out www.metromix.com - pick your place. Believe there are some places where you can split the huge 24oz wonders.

Asking Chicagoans for the best steak place will get you tons of different responses. My hubby's favorite is Mortons. Many people like Gibsons or the Chop House. I don't know about splitting the steak itself but I agree that a petite filet would be the best option for small appetites. At all these places the sides are HUGE so definately split one.

The top ten 2005 listed by AOL cityguide are:
1. Gibson's
2. Morton's
3. Chicago Chop House
4. Gene & Georgetti's
5. Smith & Wollensky
6. Sullivan's Steakhouse
7. Capital Grille
8. Eli, the Place for Steak
9. Nine
10. Tango Sur
This last is in Lakeview and my youngest son is a big meat eater, made the drives more than a few times. It's Argentinian and BYOB. Nine is real swank, Capital Grille has a huge award-winning wine selection.
They all have enormous steaks. You can check out menu's online for ideas of sharing etc.

Stopped to read some of the reviews, and many Chicagoans countered these with their own claims to the best. Some were Jack Gibbons Garden, Don Shulas in the Chicago Sheraton Sirloin Club, Wildfire in the Loop, Fogo de Chao, Bogart's etc.etc.
Morton's beat out over Gibson's by a hair on the aol messenger vote-in. Al's Chop House on Lagrane has a client saying here that "steaks r so big u can split".

The best steak in the area is in the south suburbs called Tinely Park, IL. There is a restrurant called Bogarts! The best steaks ever and they are thick and huge. They cut their own beef and you can watch them as you wait to be seated.
BOGARTS CHARHOUSE
17344 OAK PARK AVE
TINLEY PARK, IL

Call for a reservation, the place gets very busy. If you want, across the street is an Irish Pub which has wonderful Guinness and Woodpecker Cider!
Gee, wish we were going too! Have a wonderful time.! Oh yes, if you do not want to drive, the Illinois Central
Commuter train stops right outside of Bogarts...so call and ask about this quiet little suburb.

That's funny, since I live in Tinley Park, Alberts. I've been to Bogart's many times. I like their new location and there is quite a restaurant row down the entire street that is quite good.
See, too many good places to agree on "the best."

We once had dinner at Gibson's with the manager of Morton's (they apparently have a friendly rivalry and they all knew him). There were six of us. He ordered several steaks and asked them to be split for us so that we could sample. I figure if the manager of Morton's can do that, it should be OK for us mere mortals to do it.

Not to be contrary but don't drive to Tinley Park for a steak! I live in a neighboring town and have eaten there many times--it's fine but not worth a trip to the burbs for unless you happen to be in the area. There service is iffy at best, sometimes rude (we were asked to leave b/c there is a 1.5 hour time limit on tables!). I'm all for supporting our local businesses but you can do better at any of the other steak joints listed above.
