Today's weather in Colorado

Raining along the Front Range and two to three inches of snow predicted for elevations above 9,000 feet! Not unusual for June but I need warmth for my garden at 7,600 ft.

Crazy.

We were driving east from Vail on I-70 one July 4th vacation and as we came out of Independence Pass it was snowing. I'd never had snow on my birthday.

oh my god!!

We are coming over from UK to Colorado for our hols this Sept 3rd for 10 days.

Never entered our heads we could get snow or cold weather for that matter.

The places on our itinery are(in & around these areas):
buena vista,
gunnison,
ouray,
glenwoods springs,
vail,
Lake dillon.

Are any of these at elevations that may cause us to have unpredictable weather?

I know weather is not guaranteed etc, but generally speaking should we bring our woolies?

Early September is usually beautifully sunny in the Colorado mountains. Snow, though quite unlikely, is possible in the mountains in early Sept.-but if it comes,it melts quickly.

The nights are always cool in the mountains-even in mid summer. So bring a jacket and a sweater-and a hat.

AnnR, best bet is to have fleece. It is light weight and you can layer it. Higher elevations (above 9,000 ft) can certainly get bouts of snow and sleet or hail, but don't usually last too long. We are at our cabin at almost 11,000 feet and we had a welcoming hail storm just after we got here in late June. However, Aspen trees will be starting to turn at high elevations when you come so it will be beautiful with or without alittle snow. I hope you have a great time !

P.S. I hope Mr. Obama confers with real weathermen, not "underground" onesquot;> before his hugfest at Invesco field, since late August can be less than pleasant with storms.

We will be in Aspen/Snowmass 7/23 thru 7/31, then DH is coming home and I am on to Vancouver, British Columbia. My brother and his family live in Merritt, BC so I will have a washer/dryer.

I am concerned about luggage weight for a 3 week trip. I heard that Merritt, BC was 105 last weekend. Now maybe snow???

I have a rule never go to BC without a wool sweater .... stick with it for Aspen?

I'd recommend fleece over wool, or another outer garment that is wind and rain-resistant. Don't buy anything new, though, as wool would be ok if it can get wet.

Hi,

PeaceOut thanks for the reply.... I have a helly hansen jacket, fleece and wool I just don't want to take all.

Thinking of the helly hansen and my fleece pullover ... wool is strange in August.

Geesh went to the gym, yesterday, to improve my hiking and can hardly walk today. I had to vent.

ps... I do walk 3 miles 4 times a day already

Polaris, the speech will be at night, I believe, so the afternoon thunderstorm should have passed by then.

I will always remember how they scheduled the Pope to arrive at 2 p.m.!!!!!

Well, duh! It started to rain just as he was getting off the plane!

Except that it doesn't rain every afternoon. In fact, afternoon rains are pretty uncommon. Also, we are having our second driest summer on recored. Doubt if rain is much of a risk.

Karin, you won't need all three items. Just pick the one that is most versatile. Assuming the Helly Hansen has a wind- and rain-proof outer shell, I would think that's all you need. Bring a sweater, sweatshirt or long-sleeved T for underneath, and I think you'll be fine.

Worst case, there will be lots of fleece on sale in Aspen in July. You could get one cheap if you really need one.

You will probably have beautiful weather in Aspen in late July. We love Aspen in the summertime.
