Going to DC area in mid April - the school April vacation week and staying outside the city with relatives. I know this is a busy time of year in DC and hear that one must get advance (but free) tickets that same day to get into the Bureau of P&E. Any tips to bypass that? We're going to be about a 40 minute train ride away from DC so getting up early to wait in line for same day tickets is not my first choice if there's aanother way to get this done. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Don't know if this will work or not, but have you contacted your Congress people to ask about getting tickets?
Yes, as Obxgirl suggested, some Representatives and Senators will request BEP tickets on behalf of their constituents. You may not, however, have any choice as to the day or time of your visit. Congressional tickets and standing in line are about your only choices for the BEP.
You'd still have to get up early and ride Metro with the commuters, but at least you'd get right in to the BEP.
From the BEB website http://moneyfactory.gov/tours/washingtondctours.html
"Congressional Tours
The BEP grants special requests for tours made through the office of your local United States Senator or Representative. These tours take place Monday through Friday at 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. May through August, Congressional tours also run every 15 minutes from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Please contact your local United States Senator or Representative for more information."
Here's a tip: don't try taking any of the products made there. Could land you in a heap of trouble.
I called my congressman's office, as suggested, and it worked. I got comfirmation the very next day. Thank you longhorn 55 for your suggestion!
I had to look up who my Rep was (I hadn't voted for him). They got me BEP, Library of Congress, and Supreme Court tours--and are trying for Capitol and WH.
What I like is that 2 of the 3 confirmed are EARLY! We can enjoy the tour and still get to the museums without as much waiting. I hope.
We'll be there at the start of the Cherry Blossom Festival and are hoping the weather will be nice.
