Tipping Around the World

In US, tipping is around 15%. In NYC, I usually double the tax (8.5%) and then round it up, which comes up to roughly 17%+.

When I was in France, my friend was astonished that I tip 15%. She said to round up to the nearest Euro if under 10 Euros. What is the average tip in other parts of the world??

Please share your experience.

Hi mingtsainy, if you go to the Europe Board and use the Search Box you will find a slew of threads regarding tipping in Europe.

Tipping varies widely around the world - not only the amount - but also who should be tipped. You need to check on the practices in each country/area you go to.

I agree with the above, but would like to add that when I was in Japan, most people graciously refused any tips. We learned that it's not customary to tip there.

Since you say 'around the world' you might check other boards like Europe and Asia, etc.

I know Europe posters have a recent extensive thread on the subject, as LoveItaly mentioned. People there seem in agreement that 10% was max and often service is included so nothing more needed.
