Time to change flights -Maui

Hi we are taking a Delta flight to Maui & then an inter-island flight to Kauai on June 28th. (Can't wait!) The Delta flight's scheduled arrival time in Maui is 2.28 pm. How much time should we allow for the transfer? Delta will not confirm that they can check the bags in through to Kauai, I was told I would have to ask the agent at the counter. Hawaiian Air has a flight at 3.12 & 3.40, Aloha has one at 3.50. Which one of these would be best? If we book the 3.40 & miss it due to a delay in the Delta flight, is it fairly easy to get on the next one? Anyone know of any discount sites for the inter-island flights? Thanks.

If it were me I would take the 3:40 flight "just to have enough time" there are things we can't prevent but, at least you are leaving more "time" just in case. You have many options as far as inter-island airlines you could try:
hawaiian airlines, aloha they also have iflygo and islandair the last two are smaller than the first and they offer a little less flights Aloha and Hawaiian have flights up until 8:00 or 9:00, I picked Aloha for my up coming trip just becuase they had flight times that fit my schedule and also a little more room for luggage (a big one for me) what I mean by this I like to take my carryon with me and for what I got on my conversation with the Agent the carryon can't be bigger than a bag (like a laptop case) well hope this helps and have fun.

Frankly, I am not sure why delta cannot confirm whether or not luggage can be checked through..either they have a luggage agreement with Hawaiian Air or they don't...what IS that all about?

Oh the Aloha website, you can join their club. It costs nothing, and then you get discounts on your flights. I would not book the 3:12 flight; would either book the 3:40 or 3:50 flight.

Book the later flights. If you get there early, the airline will likely put you on the next flight.
Planes have a way of having departure delays- like that thoughtless imbecile Britney Spears delaying a flight's departure for nearly an hour while she demanded to leave the plane because it didn't have leather seats, and all her luggage had to be removed. Or, the kid that wouldn't get in it's seat for takeoff, so the whole plane was delayed while they took the family off.
Dumb stuff happens.

Is your Aloha flight on the same ticket as the Delta flight, ie. Delta making the reservation for you?

If it on a separate ticket, as I understand it, if you miss the connection flight on Aloha, Aloha does not have to offer you the next flight at all - your ticket is no longer any good.

If however the connection flight is on the Delta ticket and due to Delta, the connection is missed, then Delta will get you on the next flight.

Hawaiian Air: This was my connection with an America Airlines flight last August. I was on separate tickets, but booked through American. I got there in plenty of time to take the earlier flight. Hawaiian Air said that if I wanted to take the earlier flight then I would have to pay for a change fee. I used the pay phone and called American who changed the flight to the earlier one without a change fee. It was worth the attempt and saved us $50 times two for the change fee.

Recent experience three weeks ago - Aloha requires at least 75 minutes between flights in order to guarantee your luggage is on the flight you are on.
We arrived at KOA, having connected in HNL from the mainland, with no luggage. Had to wait 1 1/2 hrs. for the next flight to arrive with it! They refused to deliver it to the hotel because of their 75 minute 'rule'.

Same thing happen a week later on Kauai.
That time though, we went for the car and came back for the luggage.

I did book the 3.50 flight on Aloha, it is a separate ticket, bought directly on their website. Hopefully that will give us enough time. I made another call to Delta & this time the agent said we could check our baggage through with Aloha so I hoping he was right. Samsaf, thanks for the tip about joining their club, I did save some money over their regular sale fares.

TMT has it right. We had an experience with Continental last summer regarding our connection on Hawaiian Air in Honolulu. I had made the ressies myself, so when our Continental flight was delayed, my Hawaiian Air ticket became almost useless. Continental did nothing to help out and we ended up having to take the last Hawaiian flight of the evening to Maui. If I had booked all flights through Continental, our hassles would have been far less. On another note, Continental was able to check our bags all the way to Maui, so our bags were there waiting for us 5 hours later. Delta can probably do the same, you just need to ask at check in. Oh, make sure you weigh your bags, we ended up paying over the weight limit fees both going and coming.

Weight of the bags: bring a foldable duffle so that you can take out a few heavy items if the bags are too heavy.

Shoes and toiletries weigh alot...oh yeah, and travel books too!
