Timber, teen law makers, the place where cotton was king near muddy waters and Scarlet and Rhett are still revered!!!
A couple weekends ago my hubby and I drove to Jackson to visit the capitol and then down to
Natchez for a two-day get-away/retreat. The drive went extremely well. One trucker lost a load of timber when his truck over turned but we saw him walking around the rig talking to the sheriff so thankfully he was ok. Lots of stopped vehicles and onlookers but no injuries. The capitol was great. The folks there were super friendly and one of them even gave us a beautiful poster, a collage of the interiors of six capitols. Very nice. The youth congress was in session so we got a chance to see a few future leaders of America. Some of them already looked the part.
There are tons of B&Bs in Natchez so the search is only muddied by trying to determine which would suit you best. Some are beautiful, antebellum homes while others are smaller, though historic, townhouses and single- and two-story residences. For us, this was a trip that would require spacious accommodations with comfortable seating. Many spots filled up quickly such as The Burn, Monmouth Plantation, and several other popular places. The interesting thing is while there were obviously folks visiting Natchez, based on the occupancy rate, it still maintained it is relaxing pace and the streets were never crowded.
We chose Locust Alley B&B Suite, (locustalleydotcom) which is a loft-style apartment above a storefront and restaurant downtown on Main Street. The owners also rent a space called Clifton View (cliftonviewdotcom) that is right on the bluff above the Mighty Mississippi! The husband is from Natchez and his wife is from New York City. They ran a business there before moving down south. Anyway, this space included a great room, bedroom, and bathroom, along with a kitchenette of sorts with a sink, fridge, microwave, and cupboard.
You can hear the church bells from St. Marys, very charming, and in the evening on occasion jazz music from Breauds, the restaurant below. Made us feel like we were really part of the town. We had no idea that Natchez had so many historic homes and churches to view and tour. To some extent it reminded us of a cleaner, smaller New Orleans.
Our first night was limited to dinner at Breauds (delicious) and a walk down to the park where we viewed the river from a beautiful, old gazebo. I thought that area would be the perfect spot for an outdoor wedding. There was fresh fruit, cereals (hot and cold), milk, orange juice, and coffee in the apartment so we did not need to head out for breakfast the next morning. The owners also bring fresh pastries from a local bakery each morning. We did not request any on Saturday, which was a good thing because the next morning my beloved enjoyed them immensely and threatened to devour the entire box. They were quite yummy!
In the afternoon we rented bikes from a guy who, coincidentally, parks them just downstairs from our loft. He works in the storefront (Different Accents/Plantation Imports), which is itself a must and also owned by the couple who runs the B&B. They have everything from small gift items, jeweled drawer pulls, high-thread count sheets, and imported womens clothing to gorgeous armoires, cabinets, dining room/eat-in kitchen tables and chairs, and lots of other things over which to salivate.
During our bike ride around town we stopped and toured Stanton Hall, a massive home that took 8 years to build for an Irishman who moved to Natchez and made his fortune in cotton. For dinner we chose Pig Out Inn. This is a locally-owned restaurant with the best bbq ribs I have had in a long time. A very casual place that also has outdoor seating. After turning in our bikes, we hopped in the car to gas-up and tour the rest of Natchez. That’s when we learned the location of the casino, visitors bureau, and countless other B&Bs and mansions. We crossed the bridge into Vidalia, Louisiana. I thought this was where the onions came from, but I’ve since learned they hail from Vidalia, Georgia.
I must say the highlight of our trip was our interaction with people. We met some of THE friendliest folks we have ever encountered. Some from Natchez, others visiting. My husband and a gentleman at Pig Out Inn struck up a conversation and talked throughout dinner, taking breaks only to glance up at the college football game and scores running across the screen. POI has a wall mounted tube that I suspect operates properly only if there is football broadcasting!
I feel like I’m missing so much detail but what is most important is our experience was lovely and I would definitely return. Our stay was too short.
