Haley: Check out playbill.com, lots of discounted tickets for both Broadway and Off Broadway shows. You can also go to the Tkts Booth on Broadway and 47th Street the day of the performance, several hours before showtime, but be prepared to wait on line for about 30 minutes.

Adding to Frank's comments: There are also discount coupons available at the NYC visitor's center in Times Square (I forget the exact location) which you can take directly to the box office for the tickets.
As for the lines at the TKTS half-price booth at 47th Street, the line at times gets much longer than a half-hour wait!

It depends on the show! It can end anywhere from 10 to 11:15! If you're going on a weekend, that may create a problem, as you won't know what time to make reservations until you get your tickets. And, by that time, it may be tough to get a weekend reservation at many places!
Suggestions: Call Telecharge (800-432-7250). They might answer your question about what time Chicago end. Then, make reservations for 15 minutes after than (assuming you'd be dining in the theater district).
