Thursday night in Chicago - looking for a fun place to have drinks
My sister and I will be in Chicago the weekend of August 20-23rd. We are staying at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Downtown on E. Ontario Street. We get in around 6:00pm on Thursday night. The rest of our group doesn't get in until Friday and we have the rest of our weekend pretty much planned out. So we are looking for a restaurant, cafe, or bar that is casual and fun for dinner and/or drinks. Can anyone recommend a place that has something happening on a Thursday, maybe some live music, that would be convenient to get to? We're not into the club scene and we like beer or tropical drinks. Oh, and we are both 40 years old! Thanks for any suggestions.

go to Metromix http://chicago.metromix.com/ and click on events, restaurants, of bars/deals. Then , go to the calendar located on the right of the page. They will list everything going on for that day, included restaurant and drink specials. Many of those deals are in the Loop. Unfortunately, odds are you won't make it downtown until around 8 or so, but there are quite a few outdoor type places etc. Plus, you could go down to Navy Pier and have a drink @ Riva's - one of the best views in the city!!

Sure I have a couple of suggestions - and they are places that you probably will be going to anyway.
Jazzin' at the Shedd at the Shedd Aquarium on Thursday evenings starting at 5 p.m. (the Shedd stays open until 10:00 p.m.). They have bands on the north terrace (terrific view of the city's skyline from there) - and beside the Caribbean Reef exhibit. The Shedd has Soundings Cafe for dining.
And the Art Institute has free general admission on Thursdays between 5-9 p.m. They have free musical entertainment in the garden, on a first-come, first seated basis. And most importantly, one of the hottest restaurants in town, Terzo Piano (located on the third floor - get it? - of the newly opened Modern Wing designed by Renzo Piano) is open for dinner only one evening of the week - and it just happens to be on Thursdays. The executive chef of Terzo Piano is Tony Mantuano (also is the executive chef of Spiaggia - Chicago's only 4 star Italian restaurant).
So you can be chic, trendy, be entertained *and* ooze culture all in one fell swoop. What more can you ask?
