Three days in New England
We are planning a 3 day weekend in October near Providence, RI. I need some ideas and points of interest including the best places to see the fall colors. We're a 50 something couple without kids. We're interested in daytime activities.

I would be sure to spend some time in Providence. Go to the Italian section called Federal Hill, the East Side where Brown University and RISD ae- lots of great 18th and 19th Century houses, the RISD Museum of Art is a pretty little gem. There is also a decent zoo, a new mall in the city and the Riverwalk. Lots of great resturants.. would also drive down towards South County to see the beaches and also the folliage. There are some nice "farm stands" along Route 2 where you can buy apples or fresh baked pies.. one is called Shartner Farm. I also think Jamestown is great.. ride out to Beavertail and have a picnic on the rocks overlooking Narragnsett Bay.

Don't forget to hit Newport! October is a great, uncrowded month to tour the summer cottages (mansions) and shop along the harbor. There's a ferry now that travels from Providence to Newport and though I haven't tried it, friends have enjoyed the ride.

All previous suggestions are v. good, and I have another. If you want to see some beautiful rolling farmland abutting coastline, head down to Tiverton (East Bay), and on down to Sakonnet Point. There is a winery you can visit (Sakonnet Vineyards), and a few galleries in Little Compton. A much less traveled and extremely charming place (great for biking too).
