We'll be going to be in Claremont for a memorial service but flying down the day before, a Saturday. I'd welcome suggestions of what's within a range of about half an hour's drive for spending our time. Any art museums?

About 20 miles west of Claremont are Pasadena and San Marino. Here are some wonderful places:
Huntington Library, Galleries and Botanic Gardens (fantastic):

The Gamble House (Green & Green, architects):
http://www.gamblehouse.org/
The Norton Simon Museum (world class art museum): http://www.nortonsimon.org/
Excellent suggestions from joannay. Not an art museum but fascinating, the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda.
Thanks for the suggestions. The Norton Simon collection sounds excellent, and the drive looks straightforward. How I wish we were going down this month and could see the Pre-Raphaelites exhibit at the Huntington!
