Things to do with Kids along I-81 from PA to VA
We're from Connecticut and we're planning a trip this weekend to Massanuten, VA. We are 4 adults and 3 kids (Age 5, 2-1/2 and 1-1/2), so we're looking for places to stop along the way. I found the Crayola factory near Reading, PA which we'll go to in the morning, But after that, I couldn't find any place to stop besides Harrisburg, PA. I'm trying to find somewhere in between around 2-3 hour drive so that we don't go the whole 4-5 hour drive straight from Easton, PA. Any suggestions? Most of the places to see are past Massanuten, VA, the Safari Park and Caverns. And if you look at the map, we're actually going to drive through Maryland and West Virginia as well before we get to Virginia.

Hershey PA.
That stretch of I81 is really pretty uninhabited, at least as I have driven it.
Do you have a DVD player? Sometimes just 'putting in the time" and having a good swim at the motel at the end is a solution.
I think the park suggestion is a good one.

Two stops come to mind: The U.S. Army Heritage Museum at Carlisle ( http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ahec/ ) is adjacent to I-81. Here's a sampling of Yelp reviews: ( http://www.yelp.com/biz/us-army-heri...useum-carlisle ). The Williamsport Visitor Center, Cushwa Basin, Conococheague Aqueduct, and adjacent towpath section of Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park ( http://www.nps.gov/choh/planyourvisi...itorcenter.htm ) south of Hagerstown along the Potomac River.

There is a ton of stuff but not for your ages. I like the idea of town/ state parks for breaks, maybe some local ice cream.
If you are taking I 76, Roadside America, in Shartlesville, PA, is an old fashioned model railroad with lots of animation ( and corniness) that will appeal to the older two. It has been there since the 1930's and shows it, but it is iconic.

About 1/2 hour from Rt. 81 is Harper's Ferry National Historical Park, VA...I think you and your kids would enjoy walking around there...one tip is to not park in the National Park parking lot and take the shuttle bus into town. You can drive in and park in Harper's Ferry in the private section of town.
