Things to do around New York

Hi

Have 2-3 spare days to spend in between my New York and Atlanta trips.

My wife and I will be in NY from April 18-21. And would be flying to Atlanta on 24th April. So, I will be having April 22,23 to do something non New Yorki. Would love to hear the suggestions.

One thing was contemplating was Washington DC. However not much enthused with seeing museums.

I will be coming to NY from Boston. So even Boston is ruled out.

Depending on the suggestions I get, open to preferences anywhere between resting amidst nature or partying.

Thanks,
Aniket

Since you ruled out Washington DC, How about Baltimore? The Inner Harbor including the National Aquarium is a fun place.
You may even find that the O's are playing at Camden Yards.
Take an Amtrak train from New York to Baltimore in the morning.
The next day the Amtrak Crescent (19) leaves BAL at 5:12PM.
You could even check a bag or 2 to Atlanta from NYP if you didn't need anything from it until you reached Atlanta.
The Crescent arrives in Atlanta before 9AM the next morning.
If you can tolerate a coach seat for about 15 hours, it would be cheaper than taking a flight from BWI to ATL and taking the taxi in from Hartsfield.

If you want nature, you may still want to go to the DC area. There are a lot of natural places to explore in the vicinity if you have a car, and lodging tends to be much cheaper in the DC area rather than in the city itself. I'd still make at least one day-trip in to see the capital, which is worth seeing even if you aren't into museums. Spend the rest of your time visiting the C&O Canal, Rock Creek Park, or even Shenandoah National Park if you want to drive a bit further. It's about a 2-hour drive. DC also has good nightlife, so if "partying" is your plan, the people on the Hill do like to party. And there are so many good restaurants in DC and the surrounding area.

Taking the train to Baltimore Airport and renting a car there is probably your best bet to save money. If you haven't booked all your flights yet, fly from Baltimore straight to Atlanta.

This plan doesn't make a lot of sense if you already have flights booked from NYC to Atlanta, however, because it requires you to go back to NYC and then catch your flight.

If you have to fly from NYC to Atlanta, then you're better off driving to, say, the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Or you could go to Philadelphia.

Rent a car and spend two days in the Hudson Valley.

April is still kind of early for the Hudson Valley, although there are a bunch of fascinating sights a little later is better for nature.

The weather will be warmer and the grass/trees/flowers much better around DC than in the NYC area (which is 1 to 2 weeks later for trees leafing, etc.)

Hi All

Loved the suggestions. Thanks everyone.

I admit that I was wrong about DC. It's the capital and is not just about museums and monuments. And it would make complete justice to explore DC for couple of days. We would be visiting DC for the first time.

Suggestions for an affordable accommodation are welcome. Preferably near City centre. Good news is that I haven't booked NY-Atlanta flight. Will fly from DC.

Michael, liked your pics. But, weather might play a spoilsport. Winter has been harsh this year. I will reserve Hudson for my next visit

Cheers

Aniket, what constitutes "affordable" (i.e. what nightly rate are you willing to pay)?

Reagan National has its own Metro stop. You will find cheaper hotels on the west side in Virginia with walking access to the Washington Metro. (Pentagon or Arlington stops).
You don't need a rental car unless you want to go out to Mount Vernon.
There is a Metro station underneath Washington Union station should you decide to use my Amtrak suggestion.

Hi

Thanks a ton for all the suggestions.

sf7303, by affordable, it should not cost more than 80-100 USD per night.

The lodging should have good connectivity to most/all the popular places, safe and clean enough so that we can sleep.

Cheers

I don't think there are any hotels in DC that are that cheap, and even few in the suburbs. That's Motel 6 cheap, and it's a bit unrealistic. Where are you staying in Boston? The Cape? I think you may find your cost expectations a bit under budget almost everywhere.

You likely cannot get any hotel in DC for that price. I just checked booking.com. There is a Motel 6 in DC for $150 a night, and a Days Inn Arlington for $125. If you're willing to go the "anonymous" route (Hotwire), there are hotels in the Falls Church or Tysons Square area in your price range.

Thanks everyone and apologies for late reply.

The breakdown of my stay is as follows:

3 Nights in NJ
1 Night in AC
1 Night in DC
2 Nights in Atlanta

Stayed at friends' places in NJ and Atlanta.

DC - airbnb came to the rescue. Most of the hotels were booked as there was some conference.
AC- there are infinite options. Pick any!

Cheers,
AD
