The image of a mourner is exquisite.
I posted the following on your other thread:

Very interesting, thanks for posting that, Dayenu. These are sculptures dating back to the time of John the Fearless.
The March 2 - May 23, 2010 "run in New York" is at the Met:

Thanks for the info on the Met, yk, this is a must see for me!
I think Mom and I are going to New York in April, so perhaps we will go see this. Thanks for the info.
I printed a reminder for myself too, this will go into "to do and see" folder, perhaps next year in December in San Francisco.
Thanks, dayenu!! This may get me back up to the VMFA. It's been too long since I've last been.
Thanks so much Dayenu. I will definitely see them here in NY and maybe if I'm lucky, I can see them in SF too!
It's in 2011, don't forget! We don't want to show up a year early
Haha, the Richmond stop is in 2012. I would have been TWO years early.
The related exhibit at the Met on the Art of Illumination sounds great, too.
Thanks Faina - they will be in my town!!
NY in 2010
SF in 2011
We can give you a review before you go Dayenu or better yet, come here and see it earlier!

Reminder that this exhibit is currently at The Met in NYC through May 23, 2010. http://www.metmuseum.org/special/index.asp
Review in Wall Street Journal:

For those who think Dijon is only notable for mustard - this work comes from the museum in Dijon - HQ for the Dukes of Burgundy. These sculptures are out travelling right now because the museum is doing renovations.
I forgot about this thread. I saw the exhibit a few weeks ago. I thought they were wonderful. I've never seen anything like it.
My parents saw this exhibit last week and thought it was wonderful. I'm very excited that the next stop will be here in St. Louis at SLAM.
Thanks for posting the review yk. I'm planning to see this exhibit when we are in New York...which is soon
I almost forgot that the exhibit is in NYC right now until I saw the WSJ review! Well, we'll go see it too in a few weeks, after your visit, china_cat!
Last chance to see this at the Met in NYC (thru May 23), before it travels to St Louis.

I saw it a second time on Friday. I wish I could lift just one - I'm curious how heavy they are!
I did see the exhibit when we were in NYC in April. I thought they were fascinating little statues. Each one has a different personality. It really was wonderful.
I'm very happy to see that the little dijonnais get such a warm welcome overseas
I hope they'll go back home safely and that you'll come over here to see them in their home in Dijon. And there are so many other things to see!

Topping this as the Mourners are still traveling around the US!
We saw it at the Met back in April, and we happened to catch them again 2 weeks ago when we were in Dallas (they'll be in Dallas until Jan 2011).
I must say that the curators at DMA (Dallas museum of art) did a much better job at the installation than those at the Met.
At the Met, the sculptures were displayed together as a group in a huge hall, and visitors were roped off at least 15-20 feet away. The lighting in the huge hall isn't the best, so it's really quite difficult to see any details when you're standing so far away in suboptimal light.
In Dallas, the sculptures are broken up into small groups of 3-4. Some are placed in glass cases, some are just open on pedestals. You are never more than 2 feet away from these small sculptures; so it's a much more visitor-friendly installation as one can finally appreciate the exquisite details carved on each statue.
If you are in the San Francisco area, some fun events to check out starting tomorrow with the exhibit:

It seems, you've joined Fodor's to promote Dijon Mustard?
Anyway, there is an Old Dutch masters exhibit along with the Mourners.
Thanks Dayenu, we'll drive down to Richmond in
March or April to see it.
Went to the Legion of Honor to see the Dutch Masters and the Mourners. With the BofA card first weekend of the month the Mourners are free, the Dutch at surcharge of $5.

Both exhibits are so worth a visit! Dutch masters have Rembrandt, and even a woman painter in mid-1600s! Didn't want to leave
For some reason, not knowing anything about the mourners, I expected life-size statues. Those exhibited are small, maybe 20" that were placed on the sides of a coffin. Details are amazing!
If you go to the cafe, ask for a cheese plate. Comes with 4 types of cheeses, 3 types of breads, assorted pickles like stuffed olives.
Dutch masters will be only through October 2, the mourners till the end of the year.
