The best place for families to stay for a weekend in Hartford?(Oct 1998)

We live in Oklahoma and will be traveling to Binghamton, NY in October. We have friends who live in Portland, ME and we all are thinking about meeting in Hartford to spend the weekend together. Where is a good place for two large families to meet, stay and spend some time together for a weekend in October 1998? State Parks? B&B? Also, we would like ideas on family oriented activities. Thank you.
