Thanksgiving Night Layover at DFW

Hi, DH, DS and I are having to overnight in DFW to catch a connecting flight on AA. Unfortunately this would be Thanksgiving night and I am looking for a hotel with an airport shuttle that is near a restaurant we could have dinner at. Nothing fancy needed, and prefer not to have to make reservations in case our arrival flight is late.

Any suggestions? Don't want to rent a car so walking distance is necessary!

Thank you in advance for any help!

The later your flight, the more you need a reservation, not less. A prepaid reservation will be held for you whenever you arrive.

If everyone else is delayed and you have no reservation, you may not be able to get a place to stay.

There's a Hyatt Hotel right on the airport grounds and literally scores of other hotels (all the major chains from Motel 6 to Marriott, to Renessance, etc.) all within a few miles of the airport. If you do a google search for DFW Airport Hotels you'll find links to all of them.

I second the suggestion for making your hotel reservations ahead of time that way you are assured of a room.

Also, not sure what you mean by "walking distance". Do you want the hotel to be within walking distance of the airport? If so the Hyatt is your only option and that may not be what you consider walking distance from your arrival terminal since AA operates out of 4 different terminals at the airport - you could, of course, take the Airtran from your arrival terminal to the terminal closest to the Hyatt and walk from there.

If you meant, a hotel within walking distance of a reastaurant at least 3/4 of the hotels in the DFW Airport area are within walking distance of one or more restaurants and, of course, many hotels will have restaurants on premises.

There are two Hyatts at DFW. The older Hyatt at Terminal C and the new Grand Hyatt at Terminal D.

Another idea is to stay in the Los Colinas area, which is close to DFW. It has plenty of hotels (from Hampton Inn to Four Seasons) with shuttles and lots of restaurants in addition to the ones in the hotels. Search "los colinas hotels" and you should find one that will suit your needs.

I was thinking of your post on the way to work this morning, as I pass by the airport's "hotel row." For ease, you can't beat the two Hyatts at the airport. I'm pretty sure that each would have a restaurant open on Thanksgiving. The Gaylord would be great but expensive.

There are lots of hotels and motels on 114, but most don't have restaurants. Try the Sheraton and the Westin on state highway 114. I think they both have restaurants.

You know how sometimes two people can read the same thing and understand something differently?

I'm thinking the OP meant a restaurant that wasn't too fancy and was one she/he didn't need to make a reservation at in case the arrival flight was late.

Surely, nobody would arrive at DFW on Thanksgiving (or any other) night and just hope to find a room.

But, maybe I'm reading it wrong. Certainly you have all given the poster good advice.

If you wanna go the econ route, I stayed at the Motel 6 after missing my flight home at DFW.They gave me a voucher and said to call the motel from baggage claim. The shuttle picked us up, took us to the motel couple of miles away.We checked in and they drove across the highway to Denny's to get some chow and even picked us up an hour later.Yep, they left the light on for us...Not sure why I got selected to go to Motel 6..Maybe I had my redneck look on that night....

Thank you to all who posted!

Sorry, I should've been clearer - I'd be making a hotel reservation in advance, I just didn't know where to stay that would put us near a restaurant where we could dine without having to make reservations. Also, to be honest, we gave up dining anywhere really nice when we have our son with us, unless it's a family function, until he gets older. So we hesitated dining at somewhere like the Hyatt or Sheraton, going by what those hotel restaurants are typically like.

We're coming in from the UK (enroute to HNL) so it'll be a long flight for him, and we won't get to the hotel until around 8pm.

I also meant restaurants walking distance to the hotel (or shuttle distance, if hotels allow - I stayed one place where the hotel advertised that but once there, they were busy so they suspended the restaurant/shopping run after 6pm) as we've stayed before at some places that claim to be close by restaurants (McDonald's to me is not a restaurant) so we ended up having to take the car.

We're not fussed about hotel type, as long as it's safe, clean and has an airport shuttle. (BeachBoi, Motel 6? not stayed there before but sounds like you had good service!)

Thanks again for the great suggestions! It's much appreciated as we've not overnighted on a major holiday before. DH is British and not fussed about the holiday, but I really wanted to avoid fast food on that night. Just my own little quirk.

I'll have a closer look at the hotels in the airport area now I know that the restaurants are indeed close by.

Mahalo again for all the help!!

Just know that there are many many many hotels on 114, but most do not have restaurants within walking distance. On Thanksgiving Day, you will find a few fast food places open, and most hotel restaurants open. The "normal" restaurants will typically be closed.

Also know that the Dallas Cowboys play a game on Thanksgiving Day every year. If you happen on a sports bar type of place, the game will on.

machbird.....Well that experience I had with Motel 6 was an adventure.I was in line at the Customer Service Desk at DFW.The guy behind me was freakin out, couple of years younger than me (I'm 27).He didnt travel much and had no idea of what to do.I explained that he wouldnt be making his connecting, just so happened he was going to LA on my flight. He calmed down. When it was my turn he got up there with me to see what was happening. The CSR with AA musta thought we were together. If you've ever been delayed, you know its a madhouse.I took the voucher and we both went down to baggage claim.I called the motel and they were on the way actually. We got in the van.It was then that I realized there was only 1 voucher for the 2 of us....EEK!!! Just as well, Motel 6 only had one room left.Thank the heavens it had 2 beds!! It coulda been worse, but I cant really imagine the guy making it on his own.I think the desk clerk sensed that things weren't "just right" so he offered to have the driver take us over to Denny's and get something to eat.It worked out great. But I would not recommend that for your situation. If you are coming from London you'll most likely be arriving into Terminal D, which is connected to the Grand Hyatt DFW.The room rate might be a little more, but its a deluxe hotel and you'll be glad you did once you get there. The next morning you just get to you flight and away you go.Best of Luck!

Yes, I agree that if you are willing to pay for the Grand Hyatt, you won't regret it.

Check in advance about meal option, though. Lots of hotels have big Thankgiving buffets that would be closed by the time you arrive. Make sure there is another option.

Or try Priceline DFW 4*. Most likely the Westin, but perhaps the Grand Hyatt. Both nice hotels, and will definitely have restaurants open on Thanksgiving night.
