Texas Motor Speedway Question

I've never been to TMS and have the opportunity to go this Sunday to a NASCAR race. It sounds pretty fun, but I'm terrified of the traffic. Can anyone give me an idea of how long it will takes to get out of there. I live in Ft. Worth, which should be a 30/45 minute drive, except I'm hearing horror stories of it taking 8 hours to get out of there. Any experiences here?

I live about 8 miles from TMS in Grapevine, and believe me, the "horror stories" you're hearing are from the FIRST year of the track, and they are NOT true anymore! The local police have race weekend traffic down to a science, and since we've had no rain this summer (grumble), there won't be people getting stuck in the mud like there were the first year. Honestly, I'd still allow 2 hours to get from Fort Worth to the track just to be safe. Have fun! 8-)

You're right MM, I wasn't reading the question properly! Shame on me...
I'd allow about 1.5 hours after the race to get away from the track. Again, the police now have race weekends down to a science, and traffic moves really, really well.

Christie - I've heard similar stories from other people I've found that have been ... that it isn't the 10 hour disaster it used to be. I don't mind it taking a couple of hours to leave, heck it takes that long to leave Cowboy game sometimes. Thanks for the input. I don't know diddly about NASCAR. But I'd just like to see a race once.

Kath, the weather is going to be perfect and I hope you have a wonderful time. My mother and I are the only members of my family who do NOT follow NASCAR, so everyone else will be out at the track all weekend...

Well in case anyone ever needs this info - It wasn't that bad getting into or out of TMS this weekend. Of course we were there 6 hours prior to race time and we parked as far away as we possibly could, actually on the side of the road leading into the parking lot, to avoid traffic when we were leaving. I'm guessing it was a two mile walk from the parking spot to our seats. FM 156 seems to be the best way to come in and out of there. We had no traffic coming or going, but we left before the race was over. After this weekend, I've been to a NASCAR race two times, the first time and the last time. I'm glad I went to get to see it, but I can mark that off my list now. Thanks for the help ChristieP.

Thanks for the follow up info Kath. I've been to Talladega twice, Dover once. We live in TX for now so I'd like to get TMS one of these days.

I drove by the speedway one time and could not believe how large it is. Its like a city. Must be a nightmare getting out of there.

It reminded me of the Mad Max movies.

It wasn't hard for us to get out for a couple of reasons, we left before the race was over and we parked on the road leading into the parking lot, instead of in the parking lot. And that's perfectly acceptable. The police didn't have a problem with where we parked at all, it was on TMS property.

As a side note - saw some folks getting in trouble with the Police for selling tickets.

Oh yuk. My family found Mad Max on AMC this weekend and watched it. Kind of like a not funny Monty Python to me.

Kath, I am glad that everything worked out well for you. Yeah, you don't see many die-hard NASCAR fans leaving the track before the race is over! ;-)
