Tell me about the Maui Sugar Cane Train...

Has anybody been on the Sugar Cane Train in Maui?

We're not interested in the dinner package. If we do during the day, is it just a trip up the coast and back?

How long of a trip is it?

What is there to do at either station?

We'll have a 3 1/2 year old and a 2 year old with us. Would you recommend it for them?

Thanks!

I've been on the train but not the BBQ dinner. It is not very long, and is fun for the little kids but not too thrilling for adults. I would recommend doing it only one-way and not the round trip. I don't know if they offer a discount for one-way rides though. If you are getting a car and decide to do just one-way, have your husband drop you and the kids off at the train station in Lahaina where you buy the tickets and board the train. Have your husband drive himself to the Puukolii train station in Kaanapali just a few miles down the road and wait for your arrival. There isn't anything to do at either station. Be aware that there is a train stop midway at the Kaanapali station, so don't get off there. Puukolii station is further north and can be seen from the highway so take a quick drive there ahead of time so you know where you will be getting off. There have been Japanese tourists that mistakenly got off too early at the Kaanpali station while their tour bus was waiting for them at Puukolii. I don't recall how long the ride is but I guess 45 minutes or less?

Take the train as a roundtrip. There are plenty of things to see and they do look different when you go the other direction. When the train travels over the high trestle, the engineer blows the steam outwords which can turn out to be a great photo opportunity. It travels through the Kaanapali golf course and you can see the Kaanapali resorts at the beachfront. It's slow moving, but you do get to see some sights along the way. Have fun.

Round trip was probably 45min to an hour. The kids will love it. It's an open air train, my niece & nephew went when they were 3 and 5 and had a good time. Lots to do in Lahaina which is where I boarded. I don't rememeber exactly where it stops at the other end.

Personally, I was very disappointed with the Sugar Cane Train. The trip is only a few miles long, and mostly along the highway. You do go through the Kaanapali Golf Course, which could be scenic if they have taken better care of the grass. I expected the train to head up towards the mountains and through the sugar cane fields. Nope. Well, it does at the very end, but that's just because it needs a wide area to turn around.

As far as the kids, it is a train, I am sure they would love it. I just don't think it is anywhere near worth the price.
