I am arriving at LGA 11AM on Sunday, Nov 4. I have heard that there are long lines for few taxis from LGA to midtown.
Questions:
-Has anyone made the trip lately that can give first hand information? Realize that this may change dramatically by Sunday morning.
-Should I order a car service instead of using taxi?
-If one gets into a taxi, is the drive expected to be 2 hours or more?
Just need to know how to plan.
Thanks.
Taxis from LGA to Midtown after the storm?

No one has made the trip recently (since the storm) as LGA has not yet reopened. But it is supposed to on Friday (Nov. 2) I'm not usually one for car services from there to midtown, but in this case I think it actually might be a good idea. I guess, the current restriction of all cars crossing the bridges having to have 3 or more occupants does not apply to taxis?
Hi Patrick. Does the 3 person restriction apply to car service? I don't mind sharing a taxi or a car, but hoping not to stand in an hour line at LGA to get a taxi, then sit another two hours in traffic.
I thought LGA was open again on a limited basis. I checked flights for today and many show actual landing and departure times. Have you heard different?
I am thinking that IF I can get there, this might be my best ever chance to get a decent ticket for Book of Mormon without paying a fortune. I'm staying on 46th, so walking to shows is no problem. Will try to squeeze in three shows in my Sunday/Monday stay.
I dont think the carpool rule is ni effect on Sunday but know that with the Marathon, the 59th st bridge will likely be closed to vehicular traffic. I'd order a car service like dial7.com both for a fixed price and peace of mind
Thanks, McLaurie. I had forgotten completely about the marathon. What a mess that will be for a strained city. I think I will book a car service. Is dial7 one you rely on with luck? I am reading that both car service and taxis are running out of gas with no new supplies on the horizon.
The car pool is only for today and tomorrow based on what the mayor said today. It doesn't apply to taxis or car services.
Tried to book dial7. Arriving at 11AM, first available car at 12:15. Should I book or just take my chances with a taxi? Car service guarantees more than an hour wait, the very thing I'm trying to avoid.
????????
Try 333-3333. Allstate Car Service
https://www.allstatelimo.com/
Frank, Allstate advertises $32 from LGA to Midtown, but when I try to book the rate is $65+++. No notice that this is due to current conditions. Confused.
Call them up.
Try Carmel as well - but I think you need to understand you are landing at the worst possible time (if you land then - do check to see if your flight is still scheduled) since a bunch o the cars will have been reserved by people related to the marathon since public transit isn't fully running yet.
Also - where are you going? I hope not anyplace near the marathon route.

Ya know -- I don't think you are being very realistic here. I'd think waiting just over an hour for for a car service under the circumstances is quite good. By the time you de-plane and make it to the pick up point . . . you'll maybe be waiting 45/50 mins.
Millions of people are being seriously inconvenienced/impacted . . . a short wait would seem to be the least of your worries.
You need to book that car service! The wait for a regular taxi could be much much longer and the metered price will be much higher than normal due to the extra traffic.
Taxis hate airport runs anyway since they make more money for shorter trips. Considering the extra people in the city for the marathon and the lack of full subway service, I'm sure many cabbies will just avoid the airport and stay in Manhattan.
By the way, by the time you decide, the earliest available car service could be 2 or 3 hours later than you want.

It's like airline or hotel prices. The cheaper rates sell out first. Then you have to pay for premium cars or vans even if you want a basic sedan.
First...let me say, that I'm not being unrealistic in any way. I know exactly what I'm in for on this trip. Just trying to get an accurate read.
I received a nice email response from dail7. Although their web site indicated an hour wait for a car, they don't in fact have cars due to fuel shortages. So booking and waiting would have been quite futile.
Allstate's web page is very misleading. Stated rates from LGA to midtown of $32, but booking THE SMALLEST SEDAN IN THEIR FLEET is charged at the rate of $65+tax+tolls+tip. So it's not like airlines or whatever was said above.
I'm just going to take my chances with a taxi. Maybe someone will share.
You may be right about Allstate, but right now they are showing no cars available from LGA to Manhattan right through Monday so I guess they are at a premium and cars go to the highest bidder. Best of Luck.
Thanks, Frank. I'll probably need it, but I'm going prepared for a long wait....first, hoping my flight isn't canceled, then worrying about transportation to the city. Maybe one of the Super Shuttle services will be operational from LGA. What an adventure. Honestly, I wouldn't be going right now if I didn't have to. As a medical transport courier, we go where we are needed and do whatever we have to do to get the job done.
Love to all in NY - NJ.
In years of living in Florida, I know that "price gouging" is strictly forbidden there and there are stiff penalties for businesses that do that after a disaster. I'm curious if that's what we're hearing about here.
NYT reporting a few gas stations elevated prices to $4+ per gallon (above the $3.59 posted), but that is surely "supply and demand" right now.

Just spoke with a friend from Richmond, VA. She is seeing hundreds of loaded trucks with building material and insurance trucks equipped with ladders staged and ready to head North as soon as possible.
Good friend in Greenwhich Village still without power yesterday. Luckily her garden level apartment remains dry.
I'm still hopeful for Sunday. Surely my reward for patience will be a great seat for Cyrano or Book of Mormon.
There are other options from LGA besides a taxi or car service. When cabs have been scarce, I've taken the airport bus, and it's been fine. I'd do that before waiting for an hour for a car. That's just crazy. You can also take the ny city bus to the subway, another viable option. The n train is running to 42nd and 34th street. It's not that far from LGA.
Marathon cancelled, gas still a very bid problem. If you don't need to come to NYC on Sunday...DON'T!!! By midweek, next week I hope we will be almost normal, but right now we are NOT!
I flew into LGA this morning. I arrived at 10:45 AM. By the time I got to baggage claim MY BAG WAS ALREADY THERE. I've never had that happen before!!! You usually wait an hour to get your bag at LGA. Then there were plenty of cabs and I got one within two seconds. Driver was very nice - we took the Triboro and then crossed town via 65th Street to the west side where I live. I got stuck in Nashville all week and was really most anxious about how to get home from the airport, and it was a non-event. The 3-person rule is now not in effect as of 5 PM today (that just happened) and I didn't need anyone to share a cab with me. Maybe it won't be so bad now that the marathon is cancelled?
The big problem here is gas. There is none, so I don't know how many cabs are still on the road.
I also recommend not coming. Janice Huff, a very respected local meteorologist, is saying we're going to have another storm (not as serous) on Wednesday. I didn't even want to come home. It's just not worth it right now.
Everything else is getting better - but gas is becoming a huge issue. Cabs and car service cars are being pulled off the street since they can't get gas.
Stations in areas with no power have gas but can't pump it. The other stations are running out - and lines are hours long to fill your tank. There is supposed to be more gas coming from Jersey - but trucks can't hold enough to solve the problem - we need shipments to come in through the harbor, which is partially blocked.
So if you need to get somewhere other than by foot or what public transit there is - don't count on it until we manage to get more gas.
(A lot of buses are running. Many subway lines - or partial lines - are running but at about 300% of capacity.)
Thanks to all. Skiergirl, your post makes me the happiest. Hopefully Sunday morning will be a non-event (taxiwise) for me as well. Doug, I have been investigating Super Shuttle etc. as a back up if taxi service is an issue. I'm not apposed to a shared mode of transportation by any means. I will only have a very small carry-on. Whatever it takes.
I heard a story that one of our volunteers was trying to get from EWR to LGA yesterday and spent 7 hours in a taxi -- never made it out of midtown. Finally found a hotel and spent the night. This morning only took 30 minutes to get to LGA from Times Square.
Here's hoping you are all "back to normal" soon.
PS: Glad the Marathon has been canceled. Good call NY.
ANYTHING but Supershuttle. It may be OK in other cties, but it's dreadful in NYC. On a normal day, it can turn a 30-40 minute drive into a 2 hour tour. I would prefer a regular local city bus to Supershuttle
Got it. No Super Shuttle. The N train would work. 42nd is only 4 blocks from my hotel.

No ads. Thanks anyway
Update....I had absolutely no problem on Sunday. Only 20 people on my flight. Arrived on time. Walked out to a string of waiting taxis. Zipped into Midtown without hesitation. In fact, it might have been the fastest trip I've ever had into Midtown - with the marathon canceled. There was hardly any traffic. No problem upon departure on Tuesday either.
