Leaving Tampa to drive then fly out of Orlando at 8PM on New Years Eve. Have rental car to return. How bad will traffic be with the bowl games and holiday? Any suggestions for how long that drive will take? Someone told us traffic will be miserable . Not sure what that means or how to plan. Please help.

I think you should plan on a two hour drive, but a lot depends on where in Tampa your trip will originate. You shouldn't hit traffic once you're out of Tampa unless there's a wreck on I-4. Suggest you take 417 north to Boggy Creek off I-4 to get to the airport; there are signs, you can't miss it.
From downtown Tampa to MCO is about 1:15 driving time.
Returning the rental, assuming the rental co is located at the airport and then using their shuttle will take about 30 min or less.
You will need about 1 hour to check in and go through security.
so... about 2:45 total time needed and if you're concerned about traffic then add about 30 minutes to your plans.
leaving around 4:30 - 4:45 should give you enough time.
Thanks! That doesn't sound so bad. Appreciate the advice.
