something that worked for us was to say "find out things YOU want to do and make a list"; at that age, they are very capable of researching the subject rather than you doing the work to try to please them.

The boys are athletes, so take them to the beach at Malibu and they can look for 'stars'.
Or go to Zuma beach, rent wetsuits and boogie boards for them, send them to the beach across the street. Last time we were there, a movie was filming.
Go to the Will Rogers park, and send them on a hike, while you explore the ranch and maybe catch a polo game.

And sylvia is right, tell them to research what they want to do.

I thought they weren't interested in Hollywood, so why tell them to go look for stars. And if they are being such pills and don't want to go, what good will it do to tell them to research the trip themself?

I'd leave them at home, if possible, why take two kids who don't want to go and spend money on them. Then you can enjoy the trip with your daughter. I wouldn't leave them alone (although I was living alone at age 18) but if they have friends or other relatives they want to stay with, why not. The OP said they "really" do not want to come.

Otherwise, since being athletes was their only adjective, I would also take them to the beach or something if the goal is to cater to them. They can swim, go roller blading, etc. Depends what kind of athletes they are, maybe they'd be interested in taking surf lessons, although that won't be cheap. $250 for two hour lessons for two people. Most beaches along there have beginner lessons and they provide equipment and wetsuits (eg, Venice, Malibu, Santa Monica, Redondo and Manhattan, and Will Rogers or Zuma beaches).

When I lived in LA, I liked to ride horses a lot, so took some relatives on horseback riding trips through Griffith Park. That's a different kind of athletic activity tyhan team sports, though, but it is outdoors. May be too hot for that, though.

Maybe they would be interested in some amusement park or something like Universal, worth a try.

The 18yo is an adult and can what he pleases so 'forcing' him one way or the other is probably a losing proposition.

The 16 yo - not so much.

I think it depends so much on you and your daughter. When you talk about the trip, are you picturing exclusively shopping and all the Hollywood sights? Because if my mom and sisters had chosen to go to LA when I was a teen, that's what it would have been and I wouldn't have wanted to go unless I was "let off leash" and fat chance that would happen at 16 Or is there a an actual conflict- like a game or something at home? I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt here and assuming they actually have reasonable objections and don't want to go just because they are surly teenagers who'd rather play video games at home. I've got no sympathy when the teens in my family want to skip something because something is on tv or they're soooo close to beating the next level.

If they're into theme parks or beaches I think there's certainly room for negotiation as long as you're willing to let them influence your itinerary. If you don't want their input, you'll have a better time if you leave them at home.

My mother's favorite trick was to make staying home look less appealing than being dragged around yet another Nordstrom's. So if you absolutely must take them, get creative

Hollywood only takes a couple of hours to see, there is just not that much to it. Griffith Park, Petersen Automotive Museum and surfing up in Malibu (wetsuits needed and the surfers there can be a bit territorial) are all good suggestions.
Otherwise I agree with leaving them at home, no reason a couple of surly teenagers acting like pills should ruin everyone else's time.

Thank you all for the suggestions, I think I can entertain them with the surfing, horse back riding and Universal...I think they will be ok once I get them there. Thank you again...

I would assume that you will have to different things on a lot of days. Is there any way that you can rent a car for the 18 year old and let the athletes go do what they want some days?

Have them look at the Let's Go Student Guide and the Lonely Planet web site to get an idea of what younger travelers reco doing/going to. No point in dragging them to Hollywood stuff they will hate - but find some things you can agree on (baseball games, other sporting events) and then let them go their own ways some days.

(When we took out 11 and 14 year old DDs to London and Paris for 2 weeks they picked out some things they really wanted - ballet in both cities - and places they wanted to shop/visit that we had had enough of. So they went off on their own for a couple of days and we met at dinner. Much easier in those cities due to public transit - but let your guys investigate options and generate some interest of their own

Karen, there's a lot to do in LA. Most all of it is not "Hollywood".

They might like Venice Beach. It's funky and young.
Rent bikes @ Venice Beach.
Ride to Santa Monica on the oceanside paved path.
You will have plenty of options all along the way:
the beach, the ferris wheel, lots of restaurants & stores of all types.

Or, tell the guys to each choose a favorite celebrity, who lives in LA.
Find out where those two celebrities go.
Go there.

karen,
we took our 16 year old to a family camp (in the mountains east of LA - Lake Arrowhead) years ago. She screamed, "You're ruining my summer (it was for one week), waaaaaa!!!!"

At the end of the week she didn't want to leave and said she had the best summer vacation e-v-e-r.

I know your teens will have an equally good time. They just don't know it yet!!

Do they like Harry Potter? Universal just opened a new theme park.

Dodger baseball game,
beaches,
city bus tour of movie stars homes in Beverly Hills areas, and maybe the downtown LA tour,
visit UCLA campus, Olvera Street,
Universal Studio tours (this is fun for teenagers to see the set where many of their - probably - favorite tv shows are filmed,
Disneyland

Here is a little more about Olvera St.
It is an old area of Los Angeles which highlights the Latino/Mexican community and is very popular especially for tourists. It is very authentic though - with great food.

You might also consider visiting the Los Angeles historic mission (San Gabriel located in downtown LA). All the California Missions are very historic and I think they'd enjoy seeing it. The mission date back to the 1700's I believe.

The Disney Hall downtown is kind of cool, The Grove, Farmer's Market next door is great, baseball, horseracing, beaches, venice beach is trippy, Santa Monica promenade, wonderful restaurants. I love LA, but hate the traffic. LA has great theater, and cool activities going on all the time. The Getty is worth seeing, both of them.

Did you say earlier where you are staying?
