taking my dogs to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone

Hello Fodor's Forum,
It has been a long time since I have posted a question to this forum. I'm considering taking my dogs on my vacation to yellowstone and Grand Tetons. I know very well that those aren't dog friendly areas. We had so much fun taking our dogs on our vacation last summer , we wanted to do it again rather than board them for 16 days. I wanted to know if anyone out there has done this with few problems in the Yellowstone and Grand Teton area. I'm thinking I could hike with them in the national forests nearby then leave them in the cabin while we explore Yellowstone. If anyone has had experiences of taking their dog to these parks, I would appreciate hearing about them.
Thanks in advance!

No matter where you stay, any pet friendly lodging will not allow you to leave your pets in the room/cabin. I would leave them home - you'll see more and enjoy the trip more without them. Seeing wildlife is one of the biggest thrills about YNP/Tetons but having your dogs will keep you from seeing as much or spending enough time looking for them. Also, the amazing thermal areas are dangerous for dogs and you can't bring them on the trails so you will miss many of the greatest features of the park.

It is dangerous to bring pets to Yellowstone, especially. There are also native wildlife, and imported animals (pets) risk bringing in all sorts of diseases.

Leave the dogs at home, please.

I certainly don't want to bring danger to my dogs or the great wildlife in Yellowstone. I wondered if there were any experiences of people who did take their dogs and how it went. I will leave them at home. We did leave our dogs for a hour or two last summer at the different places that we stayed. We asked first and some places didn't care but, we did have to crate our dogs at other places we stayed. I didn't know what the rules were with the cabins in Yellowstone. Thanks for your replies.

Trisha

I live close enough to Yellowstone that I visit about once a year. When I have taken my dog, I've stayed at Coulter Bay cabins where pets are allowed.

However, it will say that it is very limiting! I have left him crated in the cabin, but that only lets me take a short hike as I don't like to leave him very long.

Also, if I do take him with, he gets tired of riding in the car for so many hours, even though he's just a little Pug that doesn't require a lot of exercise. We do stop frequently for breaks in parking lots/campgrounds where he can walk on a leash.

I know my dog is much happier at home, in familiar surroundings with his live in puppy sitter than spending so much time in a crate (even with me)!

Plus I do agree with the wildlife issues mentioned above.

We've traveled with our dogs all over the US but I have to admit that the most miserable trip we every took a dog on was the trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons. We found lodging options really limited and dingy, we did not feel safe leaving him in the car when we were in the parks and I wouldn't have taken him out for any walks given the amount of wildlife we saw. Our dogs are fantastic travelers but I wouldn't take any of them on this trip again.

Thank you for replying with an experience of taking your dogs to Yellowstone. That's just what I wanted to read. I don't want to be miserable or make anyone else miserable. We just had so much fun with our dogs last year on our trip to Sedona/Sante Fe and the dogs did great on the trip. My neighbor has offered to get my dogs out a few days early from boarding so, that they wouldn't have to endure the entire two weeks. They would only be in for 10 days or so. She didn't want to commit to two weeks of taking care of them(which I don't blame her) but, didn't mind a few days. I decided this was a nice compromise to my situation. Thank you again for your help.
