Syracuse University area - hotel help please!
My son starts at SU later this month and we are driving from NH the day before his move-in. Can anyone familiar with the area suggest hotels that are in a safe area, clean, and reputable? It's just mom and son with a packed car, so a safe location is key. It's just for one night, which gives me some flexibility with price.
We will be coming in on Route 90 from the east and are open to suggestions to hotels outside of Syracuse too (maybe up to 30 minutes outside of the city).
Thanks for any help!

We live on the other side of the country so when we go to Syracuse we tend to stay for 3 or 4 nights, thus we look for a bargain-rate hotel to stay in and hope for the best. My daughter and I stayed at the Days Inn on Thompson Road for a few nights in the spring of 2010 to tour the campus (we noticed several other families doing the same thing) and we stayed at the Super 8 on 7th N. St. for a few nights last year in late August when we moved her in to her dorm. As you might expect, both places were on the low end ($70-$80 per night), but fortunately they were both clean, safe and convenient. The Days Inn is on the eastern side of Syracuse so that might be more on your way in from NH. The Super 8 was near the mall on the western part of the city, which came in handy because we needed to go shopping for stuff for her dorm room. Good luck!

I live here in a suburb of Syracuse. You have lots of options:
If you want to be right next to the school there is the Sheraton Syracuse on University Ave. This is basically "on" campus.
The next closest a few blocks over is the Genesee Grande. I have never been in any of the rooms, but I know it was remodeled in the recent past.
A great option and ALL NEW is our newest GREEN hotel which is supposed to be AMAZING - The Hotel Skyler. It too is right down the hill (a few blocks) from the Syracuse University campus. It is much more expensive, but for one night might be worth it?!
If you can't find a room in these hotels you can look at the Crowne Plaza which is the giant round hotel you see from the highway. It is conveniently located near the highway and it less than a mile from the Syracuse campus.
Hopefully you can find a room at one of these. If not, there are still more options, just post back if you don't find anything or if you have a question about a specific hotel and I'll let you know what it's like.
GOOD LUCK!

It looks like several hotels are already sold out for the night of August 24th. I don't mind being outside of Syracuse if there are towns along route 90 that are safe?
I'll still try the Syracuse area, but it's starting to look like I need to expand my search area.

I've stayed at the Sheraton a couple of times. It's very convenient to restaurants and in a good area.
Staying out of the city is probably wise before drop off... just be there as early as you can to move in. I'd aim to get there before the official open time to get a great parking space.
Jaya, if you're new to this student stuff here's a heads up for next time... book as soon as possible preferably when the move in dates are firm. Many, many people do this so hotels do get booked up way in advance.
Same thing with 'family weekend'. Hotels are booked the moment the dates are released.

So another area to look would be Carrier Circle which is East Syracuse. A few miles from the campus.
Choices are: Doubletree, Quality Inn, Embassy Suites, Ramada, Comfort Inn, Candlewood Suites, Microtel, Courtyard, Springhill Suites, and less inviting options, Red Roof Inn, John Milton Inn, and Days Inn.
In Dewitt there are 2 new hotels: Holiday Inn Express on Widewaters Parkway and Hampton Inn and Suites on Erie Blvd East. Both of these are closer than the Carrier Circle hotels, but Carrier Circle is directly off the Thruway so they are a little more convenient.
Hope that helps!

Hi all, we ended up staying at the Microtel in Verona, NY, just a few exits away from Syracuse. It worked out well. Now we have a better sense of the area. Thanks for your suggestions.
P.S. The area between Albany and Syracuse on the Thruway is amazingly beautiful and picturesque!
