Sunnen Lake, MO

Checking out the opportunity to spend a week at the YMCA Trout Lodge on the Sunnen Lake in the N. part of Mark Twain National Forest at the end of April. Will be with a group.

Good idea? Too cold in April? Any comments?

Not sure how helpful this will be, but over 20 years ago, I arranged a reunion of DH's high school friends and their families at Trout Lodge. It was early summer and we had a great turn-out--in fact, subsequent attempts at reunions never materialized so this was the only one ever done.

I recall several of the "no-kids" and single folks didn't care much for the food as it was pretty basic and of course there's no bar or anything. It's also in a pretty isolated area with not much else going on outside the camp.

In April my concerns would be whether all the camp's activities would be up and running then (if your group is expecting to have stuff to DO) and of course, the weather which could be warm and beautiful or snowing. It's a pretty part of the state, for sure, and the camp was well-maintained with plenty of activities for the wide range of interests we had.

It would be pretty rare to have snow in April, but a couple of years ago it snowed on May 1st! I DO live on the other side of the state, but did want you to know that it would not be unheard of for there to be snow at that time of the year.

End of April could be a beautiful time in Missouri. I did say "could be" however as it just could rain or be chilly. Trout Lodge is a nice rustic center with cabins...we were there recently for a Road Scholar program. There are craft and nature programs and horseback riding and fishing.

I will ask the manager to approve vacation time.

We will go for Road Scholar too. In case of bad weather, well... there are always classes and people willing to talk

Bill, what do they have in the cabins? Bathrooms like in the hotels? Bring your own shampoo? If you want to send me an email, the address is in my profile. Unfortunately the reviews on RS website are like "we enjoyed the program". Nothing practical.

No, I think Road Scholar folks are housed in the lodge. Does the info say?

It says "Trout lodge" and no phones/TV. Nothing else. Maybe they will send something after the final payment?

I meant to ask...what is your Road Scholar program? I'd like to hear about it [email protected], We've been to 41 so far.
