Sunday in dc
Hello, my husband & I will be in dc this weekend and we have a free day on Sunday. We have visited dc on a number of occasions previously so we have done all the tourist things. We are looking for some suggestions for something unique and interesting to do this Sunday - not shopping but maybe perhaps an interesting Market or activity - or something the locals will attend this Sunday.
Thanks for help in advance.

just one word of warning - the heat wave is back today for its encore performance, and outdoor activities are likely to be very uncomfortable (if not downright dangerous) all weekend, so plan accordingly

I was going to suggest Eastern Market too.
The 11:15 church service at the National Cathedral if you like classical music - followed by a tour of the building and the grounds.
The 3pm Sunday matinee at the H Street Playhouse http://www.scenatheater.org/ with a stop at here (next door) before or after the show: http://www.biergartenhaus.com/
Lots of other restaurant/cafe options near the theater as well (assumes you've havn't overdone the H St. NE scene...).
Take a taxi, or... Metro to Union Station and free shuttle to 14th & H. http://www.hstreetplayhouse.com/Shuttle.htm
A visit to the Navy Museum before or after eating at one of the many great restaurants on 8th St. SE between Penn. Ave. and I st.

Metro (Eastern Market)
Have you ever visited the Fredrick Douglas house? Amazing exhibit and city views. Taxi or drive.

The water lillies at the aquatic gardens are in full bloom now. Drive or taxi.

Definitely agree with Eastern Market and the Phillips Collection.
If you're into art, there are a number of places that don't crop up on most people's first see visits; Renwick, Corcoran, Sackler & Freer Galleries, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Textile Museum, Torpedo Factory (studios and galleries) in Alexandria.
The Legg Mason tennis tournament starts this week end. Nice opportunity to watch good looking men sweat a little more than you will be sitting in the stands.
The Wash Post Weekend section and Going Out Guide have lots of good suggestions for music, theater, art, local events, sports.

I will be yet another resounding voice on Eastern Market and the Phillips Collection! Also, have you spent anytime in Old Town, Alexandria? Another great option. Also, Legg Mason is a nice venue to see good tennis. There is also another home/museum that is often overlooked - Hillwood, the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post...if it is open, I am not sure. Service at the National Cathedral is also a great experience if that is something that interests you.

Oh my godness - thank you for so so so many fantastic suggestions. Our current thinking is we are going to aim to see some of the tennis at Legg Mason which is something totally different for us and hopefully the heat wont be too high there. I have also booked tickets for the theatre - The Importance of being Earnest on H st if we need to get in from the sunshine - also very keen to visit the Eastern Market - so dont know how we will fit it all in -- we will have to come back again on a sunday.
Thank you to everyone who commented - I really appreaciate you taking the time to post and it looks like we now will have a really interesting day in DC rather than just hanging out in the hotel !

Other good options near the Atlas Theater on H St. NE if you don't want the Biergarten Hous (or if it's too crowded).

I realize you've already visited but I'm posting here as much to bookmark as to comment that the Lincoln Assassination tour sounds fascinating. I want to add that anyone thinking of taking it should watch "The Conspirator" first. The tour and the movie would compliment each other well.
