summer stay in Burlington or Stowe?
We are planning a trip with 3 teenage sons for a week in July. Flying into Burlington. We plan to spend 3-4 days in Montreal and the rest in Vermont. Should be stay in Burlington or Stowe or someplace else as our Vt. home base? We like to hike, explore nature and enjoy the area history.
Will the weather be cooler in July in one area vs. the other? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Burlington and Stowe are only 40 minutes apart, and Vermont is a small state, so you can go all over on day trips, no matter where you stay.
Stowe is one of our favorite towns in Vermont. There's a huge variety of lodging and dining.
You'll find a lot of great information at the Vermont, Stowe, etc., websites.
The weather will not significantly different in one area of Vermont versus another.

I'd spend some time staying in each place. Burlington is a very cool town and there's usually something fun going on.
Stowe is beautiful and tucked away in the mountains. We stayed in a place through these guys and were very happy with it: http://www.countryvillagere.com

In Burlington you would be closer to Shelburn Museum for a great exploration of history plus a ferry ride across Lake Champlain brings you to Ausable Chasm. I love Church Street in Burlington esp when there's something going on. (The street is permanently closed to traffic.) Fun to browse shops and people watch. According to trails.com the top two hiking trails are a bit closer to Burlington. There are bike trails along Lake Champlain. If you're a gardener, check out Gardener's Supply with an acre of demonstration gardens. It's located in the Intervale of community gardens, bike trails and kayaking opportunities.
I have to admit my prejudice. To me, Burlington is a vibrant city of Vermonters. Stowe is lovely but it's meant for tourists. The weather could be anything in July from a heat wave to cool weather.

Burlington and Stowe are vastly different, so it depends on what you want. Burlington is a city - granted it's a nice one, but it's a city. It offers some good restaurants, a pleasant pedestrian area, lots of shopping (not particularly inexpensive, and nothing like Montreal), and a nice bike trail. like most cities it is surrounded by some mall-sprawl, condos, and some blue collar neighborhoods.
Stowe is a cutesy small ski town nestled in the Green Mountains - very outdoorsy oriented, with some nice (pricey) restaurants and shops. I would personally choose Stowe, especially after 4 days in bustling Montreal.
