Summer is OVER and Fall is on its way...

The days of Summer are over and as the days turn shorter and cooler, we turn our thoughts to Autumn Adventures.

I had a great summer, but some plans never exactly worked out the way I thought they would. Has that ever happened to you?

Let's take a moment to reflect...

Did you have any Summer travel disappointments?

Let's take a moment to think about the future...

Do you have any Fall travel plans?

My only disappointment this Summer was not traveling anywhere with my sons (yes, I'm still whining about that, lol). Hopefully next Summer we'll be able to change that!

As far as traveling this Fall, we're talking about taking some time together over Thanksgiving and heading to D.C. We just have to decide if we can break with "tradition" and enjoy the holiday somewhere other than home.

So, what about you? Any Summer travel disappointments? And where are you headed this fabulous Fall?

Happy Autumn!
Happy Travels!

No summer travel disappointments for me - we went to Germany for 2 weeks, which was my first trip the Europe and we had a blast. My only possible diappointment was that the trip was 2 weeks rather than 3 We also had a nice camping trip in Big Sur at the beginning of the summer - very relaxing, fabulous scenery.

For fall, not much going on in the way of travel - I am in school and with school and a full time job, it is hard to get away. I was hoping to do a weekend camping trip to a local state park, but it isn't in the cards. We are planning a day trip to SF in a couple weeks to see the deYoung museum though

My summer was just great. Busy Busy Busy. We went on a Mediterranean cruise with 21 friends and had a good time. I can't say I would do a cruise again, cause DH and I agree that cruising is not our thing. But, we were with a great bunch of people which made it lots of fun. As for the fall, we are off to Florida for a long weekend the last weekend of October to see our good friends (and it still should be beach weather!), looking for a deal to Montreal in the next few weeks, and the first weekend in December is our annual jaunt for a long weekend to Paris (need my fix!).

Hi STW, a trip to Italy didn't work out this year due to various reasons (all of them various problems for various friends in Italy), operations, apartment burning down and so forth and so on. But actually the way the summer went it was just as well.

After a heavy rainy season during spring and than a few long weeks of triple digit temps the rest of summer has had delightful weather here so it has been pleasant and enjoyable.

"Some plans never exactly worked out the way I thought they would", yes know that feeling dear one. Didn't go to Portland, OR as the family decided spur of the moment to go to Tuscany for three weeks, but that made me happy. Didn't get to the Santa Barbara area as stepdaughter didn't get to take the vacation time she has coming to her.

But all in all, inspite of a couple of sad events it has been a good summer.

I will have some fun days in SF in November with some dear friends and it also sounds like my stepdaughter will be able to join us.

Happy autumn to you and to all Fodorites. It is my favorite season of the year!

Hi seetheworld! I keep thinking of something you wrote before leaving for your trip to Europe this summer..."I'm off to see the world", so sweet. Your enthusiasm and excitement are contagious.

No summer disappointments for me to speak of--I had the opportunity to seek refuge from the south TX heat in Aspen, CO for the second year in a row. I love it there-some day I hope to drag DH along with me. ;-) He's a work-a-holic...mention the word vacation to him and see how big his eyes get--kinda funny.

In eleven days, and counting!, we leave for Santa Fe (meeting for DH); after that, we'll head to Philadelphia (meeting for DH); from there we'll head an hour south to visit my family in Maryland for a few days. A week later I'll be headed back to Maryland, taking the train to New York City with my sister-in-law and niece for a few days. When we return we'll head down to Rehoboth Beach, DE for my mom's birthday. I'm excited, there should be a lot of opportunity to see some fall color this year!

LOL, well you'd never notice my enthusiam and excitement in this thread, AnnMarie!

Definitely one of those "glass 1/2 empty" outlooks. I'll chalk it up to the fact that I hate when summer ends and I was sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic yesterday, making my commute well over an hour and a half (yes, I'm being a cry baby, never commuted more than 30 minutes my entire life - big change for me now).

LoveItaly, have a wonderful time in November!

J_Correa, we're talking about Germany for next summer. Trying to figure out how to do it without visiting family for too long.

Lori, 21 friends all together? Wow!

AnnMarie, enjoy those trips with your DH!!

Autumn, after summer, is my favorite time of year!

Because I'm a committed solo traveler, I leave the summer to the throngs of fine folks with families and take my trips in the spring and autumn. Most places are far more enjoyable when they're not crowded.

I went to Maui in May, and I'm looking forward to Lake Tahoe next month. I wasn't disappointed in Maui (except that getting to and from there involved some very unpleasant flights), and I hope I won't be disappointed with Lake Tahoe (the flight there is much shorter).

My summer included a ten day stay at the Half Moon in Montego Bay. We also made several trips to our sweet little Holden Beach on one of NC's barrier islands. We have a little house there and each year my husband is generous enough to allow me one whole week with my friend, Twiggy. We celebrate a friendship of 38 years. This fall we are going to Barbados on my birthday, no less, so I will happily be able to stretch my summer.

Well, I had early, early summer travel to europe that was fun. But I wasn't feeling too well when I was there, and I tell you, they had to practically put me on the plane kicking and screaming cause I didn't want to come back home! Out of both trips to europe, I still lean a bit more towards my first trip, mainly because I was feeling a lot better mentally.

My summer trip to canada was a lot of fun and I am glad I got a feel of a city I hadn't been to. However, once again I was a bit depressed, overly tired, and got sick towards the end so I wasn't really able to enjoy it as much as I should have. And now that I am feeling a bit better, I totally miss it!

My fall travel plans are to visit the east coast. Though, if I could afford it, I would consider visiting Japan. things are hectic now, so I am really hoping I can still travel.

Life does not end in cooler weather. I'm glad to not have lots of bugs, heat and humidity anymore.

Well, I had my yearly week on Cape Cod this summer, so that was good.

I was hoping to get away in October for a long weekend - either to visit my nephew in grad school at Penn State with a day or two in Gettysburg (my son's been requesting that), or perhaps a weekend with hubby and son in Toronto. But there have been too many personal things going on (and will be ongoing) that causes me to have a fall travel dissapointment.

However, after reading this thread, I'm thinking maybe I could get away for a long weekend with a friend or SIL while my husband holds down the fort........hmmm!

We never seem to get enough summer but lucked out with a wonderful week weather-wise exploring Maine's mid-coast area. I'm concerned that with the bountiful opportunities in New England and nearby that my husband is nixing any expensive travel plans for the next couple of years now that "the next house" is in the planning stage. Fall always means my annual weekend off with friends. We usually stay within New England but not always and not next year. We had a very nice weekend exploring Salem MA and seeing Corteo lucking in to a fantastic Italian restaurant that was recommended in East Boston (Zafferano). But ... I have one friend just getting home from Italy and another leaving for Italy and I've never been there. One has started leading art tours to Italy where her parents came from and much of her family still resides. I have to save up for one of her future trips! Next year our oldest granddaughter will be old enough for some little day trips which will bring a new dimension in travel for us.
I had more time to work in the garden but none of the summer theater shows looked worthwhile. But my summers have to include at least one great private gardens tour. And I'm glad we went picking wild blueberries and I made some great blueberry desserts for family dinners. Now that family is back home we seem to be more focused on family rather than travel. Kind of happens when our only child was not able to come home for Christmas for 4 years. And now instead of weekly phone calls to a time zone 4 hours different we have weekly family dinners with 4 generations in attendance. Of course, we no longer have free accomodations in a great place to visit.
I'm both envious of friends who travel 4-6 weeks a year but grateful to live in an area that is considered a great vacation area.

I have to say my summer was great! We have gone and done a lot. I feel so lucky! It's not Europe, but it's travel, travel, travel!
1. Cruise to Alaska
2. Visits to Vancouver and Victoria after the cruise.
3. Weekend trip to Fallingwater and Pittsburg.
4. Weekend in Put-In-Bay
5. A day on Kelly's Island
6. Five days to the Outer Banks.
7. Niagara Falls and Old Fort Niagara.

And coming up:

8. A weekend at Hocking Hills, a cabin in the woods in October.
9. In November, Thanksgiving in Houston
10.And starting Dec 26th a week at Indian Shores, Florida

Wow, thanks seetheworld, it felt good to put that in writing.

Our summer was great .We went, for the first time, to Europe. We went to England and France and had a wonderful time.
We have some Fall travels to look forward to.
This week, we are off to OK and TX to see amusement parks and the OK City bombing memorial.
Next weekend, We are going to Charlotte to see if we want to move there.
Then for Thanksgiving, we are off to LA.
Finally, to end the year, we are spending some time at a dude ranch in upstate NY.

No plans yet for next year

Still really enjoying the beach (fall is the best time of year on the Southeast coasts)!

My only disappointment is that my marathon training really cuts into my leisure time so I've had to miss quite a few parties and happy hours.
