We would like to stay somewhere reasonable that has plenty of things for our kids to do in the upper Lakes area or in the White Mountains.
Our children are ages 4 and 7 and like to stay busy. We don't like overly congested areas. We like the idea of staying at a nice campground because of the activities for kids, but we are not campers. Are there large resorts that provide the options of a campground in that area?

There are bunches of them.

We especially loved (when the kids were little) Purity Springs Resort, on a lake near the Maine border.

They have cabins and lodges, nice swimming beaches for kids, canoes, rowboats, fenced playground area, hiking, etc etc. Some day trips, a modest day care program, great meals. A cookout breakfast and a lobster cookout once a week.

There are many other possiblities in the area that I haven't visited: Twin Lakes resort comes to mind. Try a search on family resort new hampshire.

Lake Winnepausake(can't spell it)was where we went every year as a kid. Now, it was a million years ago, but we stayed at a place called Piping Rock. It is cabins and a motel. The cabins are not air conditioned but that never bothered us back then. I can not comment what it is like today except that they are still there. (I checked into going a few years ago). Some of my best memories from childhood were there. The town is Wolfeboro. It is a quiet town, but there was plenty to do. We always went for two weeks.

Purity Springs is lovely, we went frequently when our kids were small. The other place we loved and frequented often was in Eaton , NH - Rock House Mountain Farm Inne -
it's a farm house on about 500 acres of forests, streams, fields, farm animals. Run by the Edges family who have been running it since I went over 40 years ago as a kid (obviously now younger family memers) A 2huge barn where my kids used to play with the animals and it had inside barn swings, very 'step back in time' - but also private beach nearby with swimming and boating - they have a community refrigerator so you can store lunch and snack supplies, dining is all together, they used to often have special dinner tables for the kids so a few nights you could eat alone w/ all the adults; the waitstaff was also available to babysit - and you are near parks, water sports, other NH attractions, not far - maybe 10 miles - from North Conway, with more attractions or day trips if your kids would like Storyland/Six Gun City/etc. When you leave, they used to line the driveway and ring hand bells. And the kids could sign up to help with farm chores.

Rustic, but not camping. You might want to google and see if it appeals to you as an option, but I think they require a week stay at least. very friendly people.

oh, reasonable - last I knew rooms were about 70.
simple, bed and bureau, no tv's.

We traveled to the White Mtns when my daughter was 6 and she loved both Storyland and Santa's Village as well as the Whales Tail Water Park. First time we stayed in Lincoln at what was then Mill House complex very nice, second time in Attitash in condo. We were able to get what I thought were good rates for summer.

We used to stay at Nordic Village in Jackson (Glen?) as kids. They had lots of kids activities including a nightly campfire sing along where we could toast marshmellows.

The condos were great (although it was 25 years ago).

It's probably a little more congested than Purity Springs but it's minutes from Storyland and closer to Santa's Village.
