Having had to help plan beach weddings at the resort I was formerly the Director of Sales and Marketing for, I can tell you from experience that the idea of this is much more romantic than the actual.

Wind, sand, salt air, high prices, and beach restrictions can turn this into a logistical nightmare.

Don't plan on any sort of complicated head piece or hair. The wind will destroy and blow it off your head.

There are usually local ordinances and beach restrictions.

You can't keep out unwanted guests since most beaches are public. Someones out of control pet could very easily be the unwanted centerpiece of your wedding.

I had to laugh mclaurie, the link you provided had 'Beach Candles' on the opening page. That's an oxymoron if I've ever seen one.


a) I can't keep hurricane lamps lit on my deck because of the ocean breeze let alone a candle.

b) Open fire is prohibited on many beaches.

The friendly Fodorites have been helping me all day on my own wedding post! I must say, I always thought I wanted to have a beach wedding until I actually attended one. The wind was horrible,and they didn't have any type of speaker system,so I literally didn't hear one word of the 30 plus minute ceremony. I was also a little freaked about all of the bathing suit clad passerbyers gawking. What was supposed to be intimate felt like it was being invaded.
Hopefully,if you do a beach wedding,it could be a private area of a resort,with a contingency plan for bad weather the day of your ceremony. Best wishes!

The Ritz Carlton Amelia Island in Florida is beautiful for a wedding. We saw one going on when we visted last June and it was gorgeous. I think a beach wedding would be fabulous, just make plans for an indoor alternative at the hotel.

I totally agree with Maclaurie.

My brother-in-law and his fiancee have decided to have a beach wedding in a foreign country. Unfortunately, we won't be attending, and neither will any other members of the groom's family. Why? Well, the groom's father is 71 years old, in poor health, and won't fly. The wedding date is during the school year, and the groom's mother is a school teacher. The groom's sister can't afford the expense of the trip with her family of 4. We could afford it, but that would be the ONLY trip we would be able to take for the rest of the year as a result, and we're not willing to make that sacrifice.
