Planning a spring road trip with a girlfriend that will include an overnight stop somewhere in the vicinity of Birmingham. I was wondering if there were any nearby towns that might be good alternatives to the city. After a long day on the Interstate, it would be nice to stop somewhere with something to offer besides chain hotels and restaurants. A dose of southern charm would be great.
Any suggestions?

Eat at the Highlands Bar and Grill - http://www.highlandsbarandgrill.com/
I'd probably stay at the Hampton Inn in Homewood if I had my choice.
Marriott ~ Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge is a beautiful place to stay.
Eat at Olexas and get some cake it is a must do!! Lunch or late lunch no dinner service.
Highlands menu does look great!!
Thanks for the ideas. You guys certainly have good taste!
I looked at the Highlands menu and the Renaissance websites, and both look lovely but too fancy/pricey for this particular overnight stop. The Hampton Inn looks good, though.
More info-- We will have traveled over 600 miles on the Interstate when we get to this stop. While we will be tired and won't have time for exploring, I thought we could make the most of it with a comfy place to sleep and moderate but yummy non-chain meal. I live in Dallas and am burned out on the typical commercial chains, malls, stores, etc. Love seeing something unique to an area, and even enjoy funky as long as it's clean and the area is safe.
The next morning we will head up through Chattanooga on U.S. 59, so it would be nice to spend the night in a location convenient to that route. Like I said, it doesn't have to be right in Birmingham, but that general area puts us where we need to be for the next part of the trip.
I really appreciate your help!
Would there be any good place to spend the night between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham?
Where are you staying in Chattanooga?
I think you would LOVE staying here - I know I did.

I'm confused. Where is your starting point?
Starting point is Dallas, headed to a friend's cabin in Blue Ridge, GA. We want to get most of the 800-plus mile drive behind us on the first day, hence the idea to stop in the Birmingham area. We could stop in Tuscaloosa, but since I have been there, it would be interesting to see something different. I was hoping to find kind of a neat, maybe historic area to spend the night and have a good dinner.
The next morning we will drive to Blue Ridge via Chatanooga instead of going through Atlanta. I can only take so much Interstate and have heard the Chatanooga area is beautiful. I will check out your lodging suggestion for a future trip!
Thanks, starrs:}
