Antietam for sure then any of the northern Virginia or Shenendoah Valley battlefields. Some of the positions and fields from the siege of Richmond are also fairly well preserved.

We still remember being the first couple into Appomatox Courthouse that day.

We could feel the terrible conditions of the 'grey' and the dignity of both sides. Perfectly preserved and a lasting memory.

Head south down I-95 to Richmond, visit the new National Park Service headquarters at the old Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond. Head south to Hopewell and visit the City Point historic site, then on to Petersburg to see the crater (of the Battle of the Crater).

Also go to www.civilwartrails.org for driving directions on roads that follow the original campaign routes.

If you haven't been to Antietam, start there. If you have, then stop at Fredericksburg. At least see Marye's Heights, Chancellorsville battlefield, and the exhibits at the Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville visitor centers. Nearby options include Guinea Station, where Stonewall Jackson died, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. Stop in Richmond to see the White House and Museum of the Confederacy (top notch). Richmond has an interesting half day battle tour, but Petersburg has a more interesting battlefield. You would be able to do Petersburg and the Richmond museum in one day, but make sure to get to Petersburg by around 2:00 p.m. to allow plenty of time (maybe 30-40 minutes from downtown Richmond).
