Would appreciate suggestions about places to visit with 9 nights, starting in Phoenix, ending with 2 nights at the GC (staying at El Tovar). We like canoeing, hiking, arts/crafts, native american cultures. Thanks.

The list could go on forever in my opinion, but here are some ideas:
-Deer Valley Rock Art center in Phoenix has a path to Native American rock art
-Sedona - the red rock is absolutely amazing. Sedona would be a good place to stay a few nights-Enchantment Resort is a great place to stay.
-Oak Creek Canyon (North of Sedona)
-Native American Ruins: Tuzigoot, Montezuma's Castle
Although this book is no longer in print, it is one of the best for planning the kind of trip you mention. I have used mine and loaned it several times. The book has specific driving routes starting in Phoenix and circling out for 2 or 3 days which can be strung together to make longer treks. The beautiful photos and text will give you exact ideas on what to see and do along the way. Highly recommend. You might have to Internet some of the places for very accurate, up-tp-date specifics, but on a whole you can't go wrong with this book for a starting point to plan. Can purchase quite cheaply on Amazon used.

I agree Sedona is a must, as is Monument Valley with a stay on the ranch there. We also loved a night on the Hopi Mesas where we were lucky to see a corn planting ceremony. Also, don't under estimate Phoenix. The botanical garden there is amazing. I never saw so many cacti in bloom.
